It has been noted, via HOME Red Deer, that cops at Edmonton's recent Drag Festival (note: free entry) violently removed unhoused community members, and were surveilling around the bathrooms.

What follows are my own observations. Take them with a grain of salt.

Why did Dragfest allow this? Is Edmonton Pridefest going to allow this, too?

On a related note: %24 of homeless youth in Canada are 2SLGBTQIA+. Some estimates put that number higher, at %40. Queer and trans people, particularly QTBIPOC, are more likely to experience housing insecurity or homelessless than their straight, white, cisgender counterparts. If they are disabled, the likelihood of housing insecurity/homelessess only increases from there.

Rather than stand with them and remove one of the biggest sources of aggression and violence that unhoused people in general face (ie, police), Edmonton's largest pride events have decided to take the side of the aggressors. They have decided to enact violence and disappear the concerns of the most marginalized among us in the Edmontonian queer community, and hide behind liberal pinkwashing while they do so.

🏳️‍⚧️ Queer Canadians & allies, please read + share 🏳️‍🌈

RARICANOW, an organization dedicated to helping queer and trans refugees and newcomers settle in Canada, is asking that the organizers of the Edmonton Pride March disallow the presence of police and military personnel.

Their demands were ignored in 2018, forcing them to take direct action and stop the march, in protest of this policy, as well as the racist actions of leadership (edit: being more direct - Edmonton Pride Festival Society's racism)

In 2019, after this occurred, Edmonton Pridefest decided, in an act of cowardice (edit: not cowardice, active malice) that no pride events for the city would be held. Small, unofficial gatherings, as well as community-led march down Jasper Avenue, were held instead.

Since 2018, no parade has been held.

This year, Edmonton Pridefest is attempting to bring back the parade, but RARICANOW's concerns around the event, as well as suggestions for what it should be instead, were dismissed. (Edit: again, it's hard to see this as anything but another show of racism, on EPF's part)

Don't let them get away with it. Not again.
