I sold off a bunch of older games and am considering what to use the proceeds for. Obviously I'm not going to do something responsible with it. Deciding between:

#GameBoyLight: Always wanted one. I actually use my GBC next to a lamp all the time, so I would actually use this; not just some weird display thing!

#3DS or #3DSXL: The kids have beat up the 2DS to the point of gore, so this would replace it (for me, not them--they can keep the toot-DS as they call it)

#PlayDate: I'm probably the audience for this; the games on it are my kind of thing, no backlight is a selling point, and flipping through the dev docs, this looks like a great platform to work with. I'm hesitant due to the price and the seeming fragility of the hardware though. There's also probably more productive dev-related stuff I could be doing. (I set up the SDK and simulator months ago but haven't really touched it since). It's also cute but pricey.

Dopo un po’ di bestemmie (perché il terribile #software di quella altrimenti ottima #console non la finisce di corrompermi a piacere il filesystem della scheda SD, e con esso le ROM e gli homebrew che ci tengo sopra), ho passato il mio salvataggio aggiornato di #AnimalCrossingWildWorld sul #new3DSXL, perché mi sa che non ho più voglia di giocarci sullo #smartphone, troppe bestemmie lì (leggi come: #Android è merda e uccide l’emulatore quando passo ad un’altra app per pochi secondi)…

Giocandoci da mesi solo su #telefono, non ricordavo come fosse sul #3DSXL, e dopo qualche minuto mi colpisce come il #gioco mi sembri più #immersivo (anche se meno risoluto, perché l’upscaling del #3DS è matematicamente brutto)… ci penso un attimo e noto che i #display di questa console #portatile sono molto più larghi in un lato (anche se complessivamente più piccoli), essendo 4:3 contro il ~18:9 dei #telefoni. 📐️

Avevo fatto questo pensiero anche quando comprai il mio #Kindle, ora che mi ricordo: il poco #spazio in più su un lato fa sembrare tutto lo #schermo più #grande ed #accogliente. E allora caro #mercato, per piacere, puoi darci #telefonini con schermi non #micragnosi? Il #display del mio #Xiaomi sarebbe da 6.2″, ma lo sento molto più piccolo. Il ruolo principale degli smartphone non è guardare film (per cui il 18:9 sarebbe bono, però il tutto è troppo piccino), ed il doomscrolling non è una pratica sana, mentre altri rapporti d’aspetto favoriscono #intrattenimento di #qualità (#lettura, e #videogiochi non eccessivamente casualoni) e #produttività. 🕷️

After some investigation it turned out that yesterday's #Nintendo #3DSXL was indeed sporting a dev firmware, but it was probably a borked homebrew conversion.
I saved the content of the NAND chip nonetheless, but reflashed a standard version via a donor 2DSXL (plus CFW).
Then I replaced the camera module with one taken from my box of spares.

Now I just need a proper battery and a back plate.

PS.l: sliding rolled up cables through the hinges is madness inducing.

i wish i wasnt so damn broke back then lol else i wouldve been able to keep all of my old gadgets, and esp #consoles. just saw a vid of a dude buying the exact same #3dsxl set i saved up n bought when i was ~16-17 for $500. it definitely wasn't even nearly that expensive then, i definitely got it for less than half of that. i couldnt afford to keep it n sold it a year later at most, for like $100 lol. same goes w most of other consoles/gadgets of mine, unless they're handed down to me. i only am able to keep stuffs i buy when i started working, and it's kinda developed into a lil bit of a hoarding situation lol not wanting to part w anything i buy, even when i've replaced it.
