So I've finally put my finger on why the Musical choices of the 4 Kids Tokyo Mew Mew localization bug me.
I spend a lot of time after watching a Magical Girl show also seeking out any old Abridged Series that were made. And in those playing an American Pop Song during the Transformation scene is one of the most common Jokes.
So 4kids playing their mid-00s Pop Rock songs over these transformations feels like a Parody to me.
I have been very critical of the implementation of the original Music in this 4kids Tokyo Mew Mew localization, but i do have a desire to try listening to these songs on their own.
However it seems like they never released a Mew Mew Power CD like they did for Pokémon.
Returning to the subject of Tokyo Mew Mew as an influence on future Magical Girl Stuff. Perhaps it influenced the Live Action Sailor Moon with the whole Fifth Member being an Idol thing.
At anyrate the 4kids version has now caught up to it's pseudo pilot.

So episode 7 turned out to be pretty good, even in it's 4kids version (where it's the 8th episode).
The most frustrating part of watching the 4kids version of Mew Mew is all the extra ad breaks edited in.
I don't get it, they didn't do that to Pokemon?
If I had a nickel for every #anime franchise #4Kids took part in that has new adaptations that haven't been dubbed yet, I'd have two nickels...which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.
So the Dub of Tokyo Mew Mew I already knew was a 4kids Dub, and it's interesting. I still like these Voice Actors but how much the Music is clearly not the same as the original is really obvious.
I could also pretty quickly tell the Dub's first episode is not the real first episode. So I have added only 1 episode on MAL at the moment even though I've seen 2.
There is Probably Nostalgia Blindness in my feeling this style of Localization isn't executed as well here but was for Pokémon since i saw Pokémon as a kid. But IDK something still feels legitimately different about it.
But let's leave the Localization discussion aside.
Tokyo Mew Mew is a name I'd first heard years ago, but for a long time I didn't even know it was Magical Girl Warrior show. And even then I still underestimated how significant it was till a few weeks ago when I learned about late 2000s Fanime and how most of it very Mew Mew inspired.
In terms of how to Color Code a 5 Girl Mahou Shoujo team this is clearly the model for Yes 5 Pretty Cure more directly then the Sailor Senshi Though the MC having Pink Hair was already precedented by Wedding Peach.
In my fairly recent Blogpost on Shy I talked how Precure changed the way Magical Girl Costumes usually look. Well that's where Mew Mew can truly be considered a Missing Link. They do look halfway between the American Superhero look of my favorite 90s Magical Girls and the fluffy dresses of Precure.
The set up of using a Cafe/Restaurant as their front immediately reminded me of Magical Heart Kokoro Chan, that connection could be a Coincidence though since the Radish Restaurant chain was already important to the School Days Universe.

Yu-Gi-Oh but it's Magic: the Gathering
I've been making card frames lately to sharpen my Adobe skills! I always liked the 4Kids version of the Yu-Gi-Oh frame, so I figured I'd recreate it and try to mix the visual language of these two games in a way that makes sense. I think the second frame incorporates the text well, but I'm excited to hear what people think about it!
