#6502portable

2025-05-11

@lefebvre If we don't count that mechanical typewriter I used to pretend coding in BASIC, then it's the #Atari800XL that once appeared beside the big TV that one day I came out of school.

I think even back then I already knew that some life-changing thing just happened.

Sorry, just got nostalgic, but it was THE defining moment of my life.

A very similar model (unfortunately not the original one but bought from a guy similar age as my dad) is now part of my #6502portable.

@mwshook Strictly speaking it is probably a mobile TV, yes. There is even a battery slot but no battery. Which is a pity as it would allow something like my #6502portable without the video grabbing hack.

Monitor or TV - my epic sloppyness. Then again, since TVs became "smart" we are back to use monitors as TV.

And now that you mention the SECAM switch I am curious if there are SECAM retro computers for which this could be useful, the same way as I convert back'n'forth between PAL and NTSC.

[repost]

My 2020 project.

Let me call it #6502portable.

It closes the loop between my starting point in 1986 and now. Like a Terminator time line, just backwards.

It's an Atari 800XL on a USB powerbank, video output captured into a Raspi on a 2nd powerbank.

Visuals inspired by Alien movie where computers look like they should. Released in 1979, the year of Atari 800.

I have rarely felt more satisfied.

@RenewedRebecca
I once went an alternative route of using a video grabber to provide captured video from an #Atari800XL as USB device readable by VLC on a Raspi. However, this requires strong powerbanks or an old low power raspi. My setup is quite flaky.

It is described here:

Unfortunately my original #6502portable post got washed away from history. I will do a repost in a minute.

@lefebvre

Got an #Atari800XL in 1986 from my father.
Bought back a very same model in 2016.
Since 2020 it lives as #6502portable #cyberdeck.

And got friends around it: most Atari 8bits, some ST, portfolio, NUC768, plus several non-atari retro machines.

My birthday party featured a setup.

576NUC+, , 1040, and my two machines: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Plus Live on which also did my music video background.

Yeah, the NUC is cheating for simplicity but I had my around, too.

@thomasfuchs Funny, I'm just about preparing a new corner for the old team.

It looks a bit lonely yet but hey, Fridays don't wait.

4 old computers on an otherwise lonely desk. Epson HX-20, Atari 800XL, Sony Vaio laptop, Atari Portfolio.

@cypnk I was about using those as the (fake) visuals on my before I went with the Alien 1 emergency destruction system instructions.

Using the Aliens sentry visuals is still on my wishlist though.

Put my new dongle into my / .

I had no idea how easy it is to go online and download and run programs. All with the authentic Atari feeling. Thumbs up!

Downgraded the 3B+ back to a 3B in my because the 3B+ needs too much power and struggles at boot. The 3B I used during prototyping had broken wifi and when I replaced it last minute I thought more is better. Silly me.

@dammn In my rare spare time I'm catching up on low-level and hardware programming I forgot to learn 30 years ago. Strictly only for fun.

I learn assembler along and , drive IO pins, just the simple stuff. When possible I prefer the real . The combines everything I do, without my traditional cable mess.

Though I already miss the . :-)

@npisanti @joshavanier You can buy "Fresnell" lenses online. I was literally thinking about it for my but didn't want to mix styles. Maybe my next selfmade laptop gets a Brazil look'n'feel...

If this is cyber then where is the punk, I hear you ask.

My grandfather was a carpenter grandmaster. When he tried to teach me when I was 10 he quickly gave up - I was not qualified. Carving the front plate from wood anyway nearly 40 years later - that's my punk.
