I’ve gotten a nice taste of 1980s B-movies and am concluding my with . Enzo G. Castellari’s rip-off of The Warriors and Escape from New York has gorgeous ideas and images, but doesn’t come together as a coherent, entertaining movie. After all, it is Castellari. But it is a good conclusion to my little series. —

I’ve already watched this movie a few times, but it still has to be in my . A great and still underrated slasher classic, , cleverly directed by and cleverly written by . With plenty of subtle humor and everything but subtle symbolism. The killer’s tool is a drill, all right? —

Three women are seated together in a cozy indoor setting, engaging in conversation. One woman is holding a snack, while another has a cigarette. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate, with warm lighting and a decorative background.

I watched in all its VHS glory as part of my and it was a delight. A high school science field trip is stalked by an alien predator that kills student after student. Makeshift budget, lovely stop-motion and claymation effects, and awkward acting. —

A distorted, ghastly figure expressing fear or horror, surrounded by a foggy, colorful atmosphere with purple and pink hues.

Just watched the highlight of my so far: . Security robots in a shopping mall go on the rampage! There's little chopping, more shooting, and what fun it is. Lasers! Explosions! Electrocutions! Boobs! Mullets! Hilarious dialogue! Synth music! ‘80s awesomeness! More lasers! Oh, and robots! —

A woman with disheveled hair is running in a corridor, appearing frightened. Behind her, a small vehicle with lights is pursuing her. The setting features red carpets, staircases, and colorful decorations.

High school drama turned slasher has an odd pace, is a little surprising and looks more high-end than its budget would suggest. The movie presents a relatively complex story and has its moments, but ultimately failed to excite me probably due to a lack of interesting characters. —

I just managed to watch before the end of the month, which wasn’t actually on my schedule, but entering @jacklaridian‘s was too appealing. I found the movie tamer than the title suggests. Long exposition, but things really heat up at the end. Could have used more Mama Washington. —

A group of young individuals sitting on the beach in front of surfboards. Some have face paint and wear punk-style clothing.

In , a female CIA agent is assigned to train and lead an all-female squad to stop a renegade agent in Colombia. It’s a pretty good pitch, but dizzyingly amateurishly done (that’s easy for me to say, I’d hate to diminish any art or performance). There are lots of long legs, short pants, and voluminous hair. would have made more of it. —

The women’s prison drama is also a subgenre that has enjoyed some popularity. In , ’s character must survive in a prison plagued by violence, rape, drugs, corruption and staff brutality. It’s often crudely photographed and edited, and the boom operator must be having bad days throughout the shoot. I didn’t enjoy it much, not to be confused with ’s . —

Two women in a room with a bed, one sitting and the other standing behind her, holding her shoulders. The background shows a barred window or door, suggesting a prison or similar facility.

The rape-revenge thriller is a questionable subgenre in its own right, but a constant in cinema culture. The Corman-produced hits pretty hard and takes no prisoners in spirit with and . —

A group of people gathered around a coffin at a funeral in an outdoor setting. Some are visibly mourning while others stand solemnly.

The police thriller/slasher is messing up my because I can’t tell if it’s really a B movie. In every aspect, the movie is superior to the other contestants in this challenge and plays in a different league. It’s solid! With , and a very surprising appearance by . Made it to several sequels. —

Elderly man in trench coat listens to middle-aged man in white lab coat and red tie who appears to be speaking passionately.

In , director teams up again with and and has them fight xenophobic MAGA shitheads, which is a pretty rare political statement in the works of . But so far, so good, I’d love to see more of this. There are great locations and some sick stunts in this latest addition to my . —

Two men stand in front of a chain-link fence, both wearing white shirts. One has blood stains on his shirt.

I’m having way too much fun with this project. In ’s , a woman must keep the ultimate motorcycle from falling into the wrong hands. Yeah, the plot is outlandish and anyone looking for explanations is going in with the wrong mindset. The movie has two action pieces that aren’t bad at all. Lead actress might be known to people my age as Jody from . With in a supporting role. —

The 1980s B-movie challenge continues with the sequel to , . But what a disappointment this is compared to its predecessor. The tonal shifts from campy comedy to dark thriller and back again completely break the movie. There are returning characters from the first part, Ossie Davis, and Bronski Beat, but this one is not worth watching. —

My 1980s B-movie challenge continues with the somewhat classic . 15-year-old Molly is best in school by day and hooker on Hollywood Blvd by night. She takes the law into her own hands, when a necrophiliac killer strikes. This may sound troubling for several reasons, but the movie is surprisingly down-to-earth and shows immense empathy and kindness towards its prostitutes, drags, and street performers. Made it to several sequels. —

My 1980s B-movie extravaganza continues with . A taekwondo rock band goes up against a band of motorcycle ninjas, god, I love ‘80s movie pitches. From the script to the acting to the photography, the quality of this movie is way down there, but it has a lot of heart. And in the end, isn’t that what makes a good movie? —

Two people in martial arts uniforms; one is breaking bricks over the head of the other in an outdoor setting.

I have a new movie challenge that I’m already excited about: B-movies from the 1980s. It started with , in which nerdy swimsuit model more or less discovers Atlantis. She doesn’t actually do nerdy things, but she wears big glasses, so she must be nerdy. And she speaks with a childish voice. The movie shows colossal efforts here and there. A Golan-Globus-Cannon production, rated PG. —
