Congress is trying to fast-track massive federal budget cuts through the budget reconciliation process—cuts that represent one big, broken promise to students and would make higher education less accessible and affordable, especially for women and students of color.

Thanks to teacher Sandra Martinez, the AAUW Thousand Oaks chapter, and the TOHS Latino Youth Leadership Group for inviting councilmember Gutierrez and me to attend today’s session on city government and youth involvement.

Students asked really good questions about representation, mass transit, and the role of local government. Councilmember Gutierrez and I encouraged them (and everyone, really) to become more engaged in civic life.
