@IzzyOnDroid I switched to #Aegis since andOTP was discontinued. Having reproducible builds is great because it adds more trust.
You should really prioritize making reproducible builds for security critical apps.

If you are like me, then you might have installed the #GoogleAuthenticator app, back in the days when it was the only solution out there for #TOTP #2FA.

But that is long ago. Since then, #Google has closed-sourced it's solution, forced #cloudsync otto it's users and stores these information unencrypted; plus it's suspected to collect even more data from you than needed. And it's a US BigTech company.

I've looked into a couple of alternatives and landed with #Aegis and #EnteAuth which are both excellent #free #opensource choices from #europe. I went with @ente because of it's larger platform support.

So why are you not already using an alternative? It's super easy, and took me less then 10 minutes:
1. On GoogleAuthenticator go to the ☰
2. Select transfer codes
3. Select all the codes you want to transfer --> Google will create a number of QR-Codes, each containing 10 accounts.

On your alternative say import, and scan the Google codes and you're good to go and can let go of yet another proprietary US BigTech dependency (and thus liability).

If you are already using a different #TOTP #2FA app on your smartphone, which one is it, and why?

@diraquel I use #Aegis with local backups. People here also recommend @ente which provides a cloud backup: ente.io/auth/
Both are open source.

Hoppla, ist quasi tot!?

gefällt mir als Alternative auf dem ersten Blick ganz gut, aber dass das empfohlene Icon-Pack seit 2023 keine Updates mehr kriegt, macht auch wieder nicht son geilen Eindruck.

Visited ILW2955 at Area18 on ArcCorp in Stanton. I like the new Greycat MTC, and the Anvil Asgard looks like a good vehicle transport.

Visited ILW2955 at Area18 on ArcCorp in Stanton. I liked the Idris experience, even though I got stuck in the captain's scream room. (the room behind the elevator in the bridge)

2FA Authenticator app - Aegis by Beem Development

I used to use Authy... But tell me why Authy needs to know my location? Microsoft authenticator also collects location. Google authenticator collects photos and videos and device contacts!

2FA Authenticators are literally supposed to just generate compute a random number. Aegis is free, and doesn't collect anything.

Aegis Authenticator doesn't collect any data.Authy is watching you.Microsoft Authenticator is watching you.Google Authenticator is really watching you.

So, Ente, a FOSS provider of 2FA (and photos) doesn't have 2FA for their account. 🤔 TOTP-based, I mean, not e-mail 2FA, which it does have. 😐

The other weird thing being:
When I enable email based 2FA, after entering the email id, it asks for the verification code (sent to email), and then the password. 😬 Never seen such a UX. :blobcatgoogly:

Lastly, for some reason, while importing my codes from #Aegis Authenticator, the app would hang (kept buffering) and not import the codes at all. I had to do the plain text import. 🙃

Finally deleting my authy account. I stopped using it ages ago. I refreshed my 2FA tokens a way back and then I went though and removed them from Authy a minute ago. Now I'm doing the last step and just deleting my account. Now that that's done I gotta just delete all the apps.

For #2FA on #Android I have been using #Aegis Authenticator for some time.

What I appreciate most is that it's #opensource . The app never connects to the internet, which gives me peace of mind that my authentication codes stay on my device.
The interface is straightforward - no ads, no upsells, just a clean list of my accounts with their codes. When I got a new phone, the encrypted export feature made transferring everything painless.

@alextecplayz I seem to have issues in reading #Codeberg's #QR code in #Aegis. It starts the camera all right but refuses to acknowledge the QR code on the screen. Weird.
