"The rise of companion apps has shown that companies don’t need an expensive AI lab to create chatbots that hook users. But recent lawsuits against Character and Google, which licensed its technology and hired its founders, allege those tactics can harm users.

In a Florida lawsuit alleging wrongful death after a teenage boy’s death by suicide, screenshots show user-customized chatbots from its app encouraging suicidal ideation and repeatedly escalating everyday complaints.

“It doesn’t take very sophisticated skills or tools to create this kind of damage,” said a researcher at a leading AI lab, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment. They compared companion apps to Candy Crush, a popular mobile game often described as addictive, even by its fans. “It’s just exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology,” they said.

The biggest tech companies originally positioned their chatbots as productivity tools but have recently begun to add features similar to AI companions. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently endorsed the idea of making chatbots into always-on pals in an interview with podcaster Dwarkesh Patel."

Not content with helping spread AI bullshit throughout the Web, Sam Altman is now planning to extend that same bullshit to hardware gadgetry

"OpenAI CEO Sam Altman gave his staff a preview Wednesday of the devices he is developing to build with former Apple designer Jony Ive, laying out plans to ship 100 million AI “companions” that he hopes will become a part of everyday life.

Altman told employees that they had “the chance to do the biggest thing we’ve ever done as a company here,” he said after announcing OpenAI’s plans to purchase Ive’s startup, named io, and give him an expansive creative and design role. He suggested the $6.5 billion acquisition has the potential to add $1 trillion in value to OpenAI, according to a recording reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

In the meeting, Ive noted how closely he worked with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs before his passing in 2011. With Altman, “the way that we clicked, and the way that we’ve been able to work together, has been profound for me.”

Altman and Ive offered a few hints at the secret project they have been working on. The product will be capable of being fully aware of a user’s surroundings and life, will be unobtrusive, able to rest in one’s pocket or on one’s desk, and would be a third core device a person would put on their desk after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the device won’t be a phone, and that Ive and Altman’s intent is to help wean users off of screens. Altman said the device also isn’t a pair of glasses, and that Ive had been skeptical about building something to wear on the body."

"In the Patel interview, Zuckerberg cites a statistic “from working on social media for a long time” that “the average American has fewer than three friends, fewer than three people they would consider friends. And the average person has demand for meaningfully more. I think it's something like 15 friends or something.” The closest source I could find where he could be pulling this statistic from is a study commissioned by virtual therapy company Talkspace in 2024, which specifically surveyed men, and found that men have five “general” friends, three close friends and two best friends, on average.

Zuckerberg goes on to say:

“But the average person wants more connection than they have. There's a lot of concern people raise like, ’Is this going to replace real-world, physical, in-person connections?’ And my default is that the answer to that is probably not. There are all these things that are better about physical connections when you can have them. But the reality is that people just don't have as much connection as they want. They feel more alone a lot of the time than they would like.”

He said he thinks things like AI companions have a “stigma” around them now, but that society will eventually “find the vocabulary” to describe why people who turn to chatbots for socialization are “rational” for doing so.

His view of real-world connections seems to have shifted a lot in recent years, after lighting billions of dollars on fire for a failed metaverse gambit. Patel asked Zuckerberg about his role as CEO, and he said—among things like managing across projects and infrastructure—that he sees his place in the company as a tastemaker. “Then there's this question around taste and quality. When is something good enough that we want to ship it? In general, I'm the steward of that for the company,” he said. "
