I will die on this hill. I genuinely believe that the special edition of Empire Strikes Back, the edition that most people know nowadays, is the better one visually. Most of the changes genuinely add to the movie, like fixing the PS1 Emperor or expanding Cloud City to look more lively.
A lot of people like to shit all over the special editions, but in the case of Empire Strikes Back, I genuinely believe that it makes for a better movie. Given the choice, I will always pick that version.
Now, with that said... MY GOD DOES THE ADDITIONS MADE TO A NEW HOPE LOOK TERRIBLE.
Most of the CGI, especially on Tatooine, is just disgusting. it's so bad that it generally takes you out of the movie because all of a sudden you have this 3D creature that's been poorly integrated into the scene, it doesn't properly connect with the ground, the shadows are not properly aligned, the lighting is completely off. It's an eyesore.
Additionally, you have fully CGI shots which are horrendous. There is a couple of good ones, especially during the Battle of Yavin, against the Death Star, where you see some X-Wings and Y-Wings that are fully CG. But because it's in space, it doesn't stick out at all. It even looks quite good, I would say, but again, on Tatooine, it's awful.
I'm not going to talk about the addition made to the scene with Han Solo and Greedo, this whole Han shot first thing is... erh. I couldn't give less of a damn, even if I tried. It is so incredibly boring as a debate. It's such a minor addition. Get over it.
What I'm going to talk about however, is the fact that even the rocks behind which R2D2 is hiding look terrible and completely out of place. Every time I see them, I wonder if they stick out so much because I know that they're CGI, or because they just look awful, but the fact that they keep sticking out that much to me makes me think it's to latter.
What the fuck, George! :bunhdangry:
