Hit character limits but I want to explain point 2,3,4 here:

  • 2: When you change topic, ND people don't just change to what you said, their brain can attempt to pull in every bit of information that can possibly be related to it. It's less like changing a tab in a browser, and more like closing the program and opening another.
  • 3: You can narrow this range, and have more of the 'upper' end, by simply providing/allowing adequate structure and for them to use their current fixation as motivation.
  • 4: Neurodivergent people resist sudden change, because we rely on predictability and structure to follow neurotypical people's preferred ways of working.

If you read this and think, "but wouldn't this benefit anyone?" Yes, exactly, that's kind of the point. Which just adds to the frustration that we don't do this more as a society.

When accessibility measures include an entire group of people, and still benefits everyone, it's absurd that we don't do it more.

This compulsive adherence to neurotypical social norms, and unwillingness to embrace neurodivergence, is what leads to social friction & conflict.

Frustratingly enough, it's caused by often ignorant assumptions as to 'why' ND people will prefer A over B, there are countless examples of this:

  • A preference for working alone/at home to better manage distractions, is seen as anti-social or 'difficult to work with'
  • Being unable to answer ad-hoc off-topic questions, is seen as unorganised or lack of intelligence.
  • Having variable (20-400%) effort and output, is seen as anything from 'lazy' to a variety of ways of saying 'you don't care'
  • Struggling with sudden changes to plans and structure, is seen as being difficult or unwilling to change/grow.

All of this is trivially easy to solve, and the information need to understand it could be summarized in a freggin' PowerPoint presentation.

It annoys me so much, because; Accessibility != Lack of ability

Just to be specific for my fellow ND people currently thinking through millions of mentally simulated cases of this: the way we communicate, are motivated and preferred working methods & environments.

There are tech companies who have a neurodivergent majority working there, yet compulsively follow neurotypical social rules & norms.

Even pointing this out could cause friction over awareness, while the absurdity of it all goes over their heads.

Which means I both have the opportunity and excuse to book each of them for an explainer on neurodivergency in IT/Dev and why that can be a benefit, especially for certain roles (DevOps, Infra).

There are more of us than they're aware of in the company, and I think many of the current things that are causing friction in communication atm is down to a lack of understanding about how ND people best function & communicate.

You give ND people structure and motivation through challenge, ideally gamified. Not providing them with direction and adequate motivation is equally a failure to facilitate the person and effectively utilizing their abilities.

Being ADHD, I’m blessed with enhanced pattern recognition. Blah blah subconscious. Massive dataset, actual spectrum of human sensory input blah blah. Intuition blah blah. Comprehension blah blah. NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. I know what you’re going to say. I know what’s going to happen. It’s a calculation of probability – based on dataset. #adhd #asd #autism

A fundraiser for one of my friends here in Maine, organized by her sister. Jessica is a caregiver of two autistic kids and a good human. Please boost and donate if you can...

Support Jessica's Healing After ICU Battle

Organized by Shelly Cox

"My sister Jessica went in for an emergency abdominal surgery on May 27th. She was in the ICU on a ventilator for 8 days as she fought off the sepsis and worked hard on healing. It was terrifying, and I thought we were going to lose her. She is now in a regular room in the hospital and is preparing for discharge. Thank goodness.

"The recovery will be long, and she will need to have help at home for herself and also to help care for her children. Both of Jessica's children are on the autism spectrum, and the younger one has very high support needs. She is their sole caregiver and has given every part of herself to them, often in neglect of her own needs.

"I would like to raise some money to help with the care of Alexander, her younger son, while she heals and regains her strength over the next couple of months. I want her to be able to focus on taking care of herself and minimize stress as much as possible!"
