I loved this spy thriller set just before World War 2 and written in the early years of that war. Oddly enough, Hitler and even the Sieg Heil greeting are never referred to by name, just alluded to, although there is a joking reference to El Duce near the end. It sometimes suggested that British people did not know the true nature of the Nazi regime in the early years of the war but this Scottish writer certainly depicts it accurately and the novel was tremendously popular too. The events were loosely adapted from the experiences of MacInnes and her husband, Gilbert Highet. I look forward to watching the film adaptation starring Fred McMurray and Joan Crawford, and suspect the plot of the book is simplified.
