I’m getting increasingly irate about my university’s subtle, quiet move to removing online & hybrid access for staff. Talks/training were almost always hybrid when I started. A few months on, more and more is ‘in person only.’ Universities, you have disabled staff working remotely for multiple access reasons. Our access matters. #AcademicAbleism

I'm at a fantastic webinar on the Politics and Practices of University Exclusion, sharing findings from #SocialResearch with/led by marginalised researchers in universities - beginning with a research project on LGBT+ staff on the rainbow lanyard & experiences of support/exclusion in universities. Talks coming up from racially minoritised & disabled researchers on their work/networks. One theme coming through is the extra labour of #MarginalisedResearchers that #Academia relies on from them but doesn't compensate. Another is a lack of accountability e.g. when trying to navigate anonymous systems. Loved one participant's call for solidarity between academics from many oppressed groups. #AcademicRacism #AcademicTransphobia #AcademicAbleism

@elduvelle Ableism is what slants it. Right now people comparing in-person and online conference options are comparing apples and road apples.

Ableism ensures that all of society makes as little investment as possible into accessible options (as you can see by how we're not learning lessons from the pandemic, rolling back most online options & training & development of online pedagogy/event planning). #Conferences #Ableism #Pedagogy #AcademicAbleism

Are Universities Failing the Accommodations Test?

As instructors struggle to meet the complex needs of students, schools are leaving both to fend for themselves

I brought a couple of complaints to my HR recently & damn, I'm happy. They confirmed what I thought (yes, this looks an awful lot like disability discrimination) & are investigating. Fingers crossed folks. HR is not always the friend of disabled folks in #HigherEd so I had to share the news.

Also, to all of my disabled friends in academia, document the heck out of everything.

yay another episode of #AcademicAbleism !!

So we had our retake times and dates back, and my retake for Clinical Biomedicine is going to be at 9am on the 16th. This is in spite of the fact that I have an adaption that stipulates that all my exams must be taken in the afternoon.

Its pointless complaining, as I know what they'll say: "No disability adaptions are guaranteed".

#Academia needs change and those within it need to be held accountable for #Accessibility .

It's 2024 and we're still doing laptop bans in classrooms, huh?

For the millionth time, technology bans are incredibly ableist. There's no discussion to be had.

Requiring disabled students to out themselves as disabled in order to use their technology in class makes you a poor educator.

Your regular reminder to document everything, especially everything from those holding any sort of power over you. One of them will inevitably discriminate against you for being disabled, dig their heels in, and you will need to go to HR.

If you've got it all documented, it's easier.

Apparently the expectation that PostDoc applicants have been a Co-PI on major grants is now popping up. Have you advertised for a PostDoc position that required Co-PI on major funding? Congratulations on contributing to toxic work expectations, shutting out minorities, and showing that you're an asshole.

As the semester has ended for most folks, I want to remind all disabled students about the US Office of Civil Rights. If you were discriminated against for your disability or denied an accommodation, you have 90 days since the incident to file a complaint.

The amount of time I have spent teaching others about disability, accommodations, HIPAA, ableism compared to the amount of time I have spent doing my actual job is ridiculous. It's a form of #AcademicAbleism. I spend more time advocating for student rights and the rights of neurodivergent people in #STEM and #HigherEd. Not because I want my advocacy to be such a large part of my identity. I actually would prefer to do more science & research, publish more, submit more grant proposals. (1/n)

Timely reminder that disabilities are fluid. A person may be symptomatic one day and fine the next. A student may not need accommodations during the semester, but the end of the term rush may make accommodations very necessary. This does NOT mean the student is faking it or taking advantage of you.

Check out this recent poster, "ADHD Assessment and Treatment Policies among a National Sample of US Colleges and Universities". Two main points I'm taking away from this review of 200 institutions: <20% offer clinical #ADHD diagnoses and 25-50% do not allow their docs to prescribe stimulants.

Poster titled, "ADHD Assessment and Treatment Policies among a National Sample of US Colleges and Universities." Authors are James Aluri, MD, MA; Arman Terzian, MD; Ramin Mojtabai, MD, PhD, MPH, MA; Amelia Arria, PhD. Full poster text does not fit here, please see link. 1. Background

o 10%-14% of college students have ADHD
o In college students, ADHD is associated with
lower academic achievement, increased
substance use, and increased suicidality
o Many postsecondary institutions regulate access
to stimulant prescriptions at campus-based clinics
to mitigate misuse of stimulants
o The landscape of ADHD clinical assessment and
treatment policies at postsecondary institutions in
the United States is unknown.
4. Discussion
Interpretation:
o To our knowledge, this is the first review of ADHD
clinical assessment and treatment policies among
postsecondary institutions in the US
o Policies are often unavailable online
o ADHD assessment and treatment are not commonly
available on campus
o Urine drug screens and medication contracts, both
unstudied prescription regulations, are commonly used
in the college context (more so than in primary care)
Limitations:
o Web search strategy might have missed information
o Web information might not accurately depict an
institution’s policy
o Institutions that participated in the survey were self-
selected
Strengths:
o Representative sample and subsample
o Cross-validated web search strategy (Kappa = 0.77)
o Multiple data sources

Any other neurodivergent folks get every question wrong in the university's cyber security training or is that just me? I can almost always think of an exception to an answer and am currently failing mine.

@cavyherd Any chance you are registered with the disability office or it's a quick process to do so? This is such blatant #AcademicAbleism that it should get shut down pretty damn quickly.

2024-03-04

Having zero folks on your staff roster with a background in disability studies is a red flag for a university disability services/ accessibility services. Just my two cents.
