#AI #ComputerScience #CompSci #PeerReview #AcademicConferences #LLMs: "AI is upending peer review, the time-honored tradition in which academics help judge which research should be elevated to publication — and which should go in the reject pile. Under the specter of ChatGPT, no one can be sure anymore that their intellectual labor is being read and judged by humans. Scientists, even those who think generative AI can be a helpful tool, say it’s demoralizing to be on the receiving end of an evaluation blatantly outsourced to a robot. And in an ironic twist, this blow to the ego appears to be hitting the AI field most of all: Up to 17 percent of reviews submitted to prestigious AI conferences in the last year were substantially written by large language models (LLMs), a recent study estimated.

Already, there are signs that AI evaluations could be corrupting the integrity of knowledge production. Computer-generated feedback may slightly boost a manuscript’s chance of approval, and uploading someone’s unpublished data into a chatbot in order to produce a review could amount to a breach of confidentiality policies. These are problems without easy solutions, ones that organizers of computer-science conferences — the main venues for publishing research in that field — are just beginning to acknowledge.

Unfortunately, AI researchers have only themselves to blame."

Academic associations: when you are looking for graduate students to do work for a conference, perhaps don't offer an honorarium equivalent to less than minimum wage in 12 out of 13 provinces and territories.

That's not even counting the unknown (uncompensated?) time for the mandatory orientation session.

If you’re seeing all the #SCMS24 and #PCAACA2024 posts and battling #FOMO, don’t fear: you can totally participate in conferences from afar! Here are tips on how to stay engaged and active at conferences and other events you are interested in but can’t attend: ideasonfire.net/conference-par

So many great conferences, so little time! It's an annual source of frustration for interdisciplinary scholars: Some events we’d love to be at simply won’t fit in our schedule or budget.

But we can still be part of the exciting, innovative conversations happening at the conferences we opt out of.

Here are some ways to engage in meaningful conference participation from afar.

What do people do with Certificates of Attendance for conferences? I was expecting a few people might want one for weird internal bureaucracy things, but seemingly half of this conference has asked for one. Why?

The benefits of having external supervisors: Excited about being able to present at the #ASEEES23 conference (or convention, as they call it) in December! This pan-Slavic conference accepted my presentation in a panel on Linguistic Analysis of Slavic Media Discourse.

Places #scholarly and other organizations should not be hosting #conferences: Texas, Florida, North Carolina....where else?

On top of continuing #Covid deaths and disabilities, the politics of these states should be convincing orgs to have virtual/online conferences.

Conferences / symposia - what are your pet peeves -- and what often goes wrong? I'm planning one but I haven't been to one for 3 years (for fairly obvious reasons) ... what are some issues that might be easily overlooked? (This one is mostly in person not hybrid, with a few zoom-only sessions.)

I was told, in the heat of #FathersDay2022, that I should have reconsider before having children as a #singleparent in #academia - because I brought up how #daycare in #AcademicConferences would make my participation bossible. Yes, let's blame #parents, not #structures 🤦‍♀️
