Are review articles dying in the age of AI?

A year ago, we thought so. Today, we see something more nuanced: generative AI is not replacing reviews — it is differentiating them. Descriptive syntheses are increasingly automatable, while reflexive, agenda-setting reviews become even more valuable as knowledge infrastructure:

Can we trust “guidelines on how to write a scientific paper”? We analysed 71 “Write a Scientific Paper” guidelines that were widely used and cited for years as best practices.

:doi: doi.org/10.1080/10875301.2026.

Facts:
▪️ 555 citations
▪️ 48 papers carry an editorial expression of concern
▪️ 30 (42%) have been retracted!

🎓 PhD tip: Impact Factor isn't everything.

Consider:
• Field-specific metrics
• Journal reputation
• Open access options
• Review timeline
• Audience reach

I have signed up as a "recommender" (like an editor) for @PCI_StatML . Looking forward to seeing how this goes. statml.peercommunityin.org/abo

Early career researchers tend to think that an editor's rejection (or a revision request they can't accommodate), means they have to give up and submit elsewhere. In my experience, explaining your side to the editor (in a polite and reasonable tone) can sometimes make them reconsider. It's often worth the try, if nothing else for the catharsis.

Updating my online academic publications list, adding my book chapter in the latest Scottish History Society Miscellany volume. Rather marvelling that I am still publishing, as my neurological disease progresses. But still enjoying, and it helps me. vivdunstan.co.uk/publications/ #Academia #AcademicPublishing #neurological #ChronicIllness #History

🌻#OpenAccess publishing and scientific communication infrastructure in Ukraine have distinct characteristics shaped by socioeconomic conditions and by the structure of the national science and research system. War-related destruction has created numerous challenges for the functioning of Ukraine’s scholarly communication system. Here’s one example of international support to keep publishing alive

Nice idea in this paper to help make bring wider access to potentially useful compounds languishing in cold storage. Also interesting is that, along with the 12 individuals named, the author list includes "Todd Group Researchers". I find I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, a lot of people made many small but very important contributions and they deserve credit. OTOH, isn't this what acknowledgements are for?

The chaotic state of the academic knowledge sphere, both edtech and GenAI content. This is a rapidly increasing view of much cleverer and higher profile academics than me.
