A large group of people in winter clothes, many in red santa hats, gather under bare trees in a green space next to some cream buildings. They are being addressed by a woman with long red hair while a man in green nearby waits to cut a green ribbon around a storage unit. There are cargo cycles parked in the foreground.

Quite pleased to ride the brand new Deptford Church Street cycle tracks for the first time this morning, just a few hours before the official opening. Lewisham council has built a very high quality route upgrading and linking the existing Waterlink Way (Cycleway 18) to Cycleway 4 and Cycleway 10. More of this, please!

How could/should/will we get around the cities of the future? A car for everyone is never going to work in a city, but once we go back to seeing the streets as places for people to get around (rather than "where the cars go") how could it all work? Cities and technology are constantly evolving, and so our city streets will too. For this week's Rare Earth, on air at 12 today and online afterwards, we talked to Chris Boardman, Stephen Potter and Karen Lucas about what the future holds. Listen here:

In the light grey back slabs of a stone seating area, we can make out the silhouette of a bicycle carved into the stone - marking out the space for train station cycle parking behind the benches, in which we can see numerous cycles parked on elevated stands, and sandstone tenements beyond.

Cycling around NSW?

The State govt has an excellent online resource to plan your trips in order to maximise paths and minimise time on roads. Bravo NSW, well done!

"Get in-depth information on bicycle routes across NSW, including high-speed roads where cycling is allowed."

Clearly a lot of work has been done in NSW on their cycling infrastrure, but vast amounts remain to be completed. Esp in rural and regional areas where cycling is rare because it is so hazardous.

But it's a great start.

"Compared with the billions spent on WestConnex freeways and Sydney’s metro lines, the $57m price tag for the GreenWay seems like small change. But the new route could unlock huge benefits for those using the city’s frustratingly piecemeal cycle network."

It turns out it was all a waste of paper and a waste of my time taking part in the consultation. The council now say regarding the Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council Cycling Strategy: "Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, as a district local authority, has no responsibility for cycling strategy and, therefore, does not hold the information requested."

Apparently I missed Sustrans rebranding. Also apparently they found it hard to describe what they stood for (is "Sustainable Transport" difficult to understand?).

A friend of mine told me that, when he did some work for them, they didn't have anywhere to park bikes nearby, but that was decades ago.

A large group of cyclists in variously coloured helmets, jackets and winter wear gather on an asphalt gyratory island flanked by roads, under a pale grey winter sky; they are being addressed by a blonde lady in a woollen hat using a microphone, while a double-decker bus goes past. Banners reading ‘The Causey’ - the name of the location and placemaking project - and ‘Critical Mass’, the name of the cycle ride - can be seen among the crowd. In the background, tall churches and university buildings loom.

#Basingstoke Borough Council's 2016 Cycling Strategy had a target to double cycle trips to work over 10 years. I should probably contact them to ask how that's going given that between it and the subsequent LCWIP, nothing really has changed in terms of producing joined-up high quality cycling infrastructure.

The Pentland hills silhouetted against a setting sun; the sky is a wash of warm orange and crystal blue, we can make out the white mark of the dry ski run on the near slope, and there is a scattering of thin, wispy cloud across the sky. The picture is framed in by a bare tree’s branches in the top right corner.

@pedestrians1st we'll have to see if they cut the cycle-to-work scheme instead of expanding it to non-workers, and if active travel funding continues to be a tiny fraction of motoring and able to be subverted into more motoring projects. I suspect CTW will be capped, no expansion and keep allowing active travel grants to build car parks and do road resurfacing.

It's good stuff - the Government gets it, now why can't they get Councils (highways and planning departments) and developers to actually deliver these important road safety fixes?
