For context I’ve set up #HAOS on a #RPi5, and #Jellyfin & #ShinobiNVR & #AdGuardHome on a #Linux server. They work great (well, not Shinobi yet…) on my home LAN, but I would like access outside of my home as well. I’m wading into unfamiliar territory though so I want advice from more knowledgeable nerds than me 🤓

I started to suspect that both my Apple TV and Homepod Mini were being naughty children making DNS queries to servers other than my local one.

So put together a list of the bigger public IPv4 and IPv6 DNS servers, then added a firewall rule rejecting all traffic to them from all devices other than my AdGuard Home server.

And guess what I found - I was right. Unauthorised communication with Cloudflare, and avoiding my AdGuard Home server.

We have a few Samsung TVs and my wife likes when I run Stingray’s Naturescapes channel on them. This channel has videos of the beach, forests, etc. Because this content is streaming, I broke the ultimate rule and connected these TVs to the internet. They’re also behind #AdGuardHome. Finally, they turn on and off automatically (via #HomeAssistant). (1/2)

so i have got two spare machines, a #thinkpad t460s and a dell inspiron n4010.
today i've put #debian trixie stable on the thinkpad which will be my main lab, and #openmediavault on the dell to make it a #NAS which will barely run any dedicated services.

moreover, i setup #docker and #tailscale. after which i started running the #vaultwarden and #AdguardHome containers.

current roadblock:
tailscale serve only let's me serve a single service via a single domain, i wanna figure how i can use multiple different domains on my local network so that i can access them individually at the same time.

i.e. something like,
vaultwarden.smth.ts.net
adguard.smth.ts.net

i haven't figured that out yet

Switched from Pi-hole to AdGuard Home + Unbound. The main change: I've disabled AdGuard's internal cache so that Unbound handles all caching centrally with values perfectly tuned for the RAM. 🛡️

At the same time, Unbound acts as a recursive resolver, fetching everything directly from the root servers. No more double-caching, just full control and lightning-fast responses! ⚡️
