#Palestine / Human Rights groups challenge Israeli laws to halt UNRWA activities, citing humanitarian crisis

Human rights organizations #Adalah and #Gisha, alongside Palestinian refugees, have petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court to overturn two laws that would halt #UNRWA’s operations in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and #Gaza. The petitioners argue that the laws violate basic human rights and Israel’s international legal obligations, potentially causing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis by cutting off essential services like healthcare and education. Critics condemn the laws as part of a broader effort to erase Palestinian identity and rights, with some labeling them as potential war crimes under international law.

[…] The petition, submitted by Adalah’s Legal Director, Dr. Suhad Bishara, argues that the laws could silence UNRWA’s activities in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. This is because UNRWA requires extensive multi-system coordination with Israeli authorities to operate in these areas. This includes establishing administrative and logistical headquarters for the agency; issuing visas and work permits for its staff; coordinating with military authorities regarding the organization’s activities; arranging exemptions from customs, levies, and taxes; importing goods and equipment, including medicines; coordinating the entry and transfer of medicines and other essential supplies to various areas; licensing and registering the agency’s vehicle fleet; and coordinating operational systems during military operations. Such coordination is also necessary for the functioning of UNRWA’s humanitarian aid operations in Gaza during wartime.

MK Aida Touma-Suleiman:

[…] Those disgraceful proposers, who hinge their argument on October 7 as a defining event to justify their proposal, stood at this very podium even before that day and did not hide their desire to eliminate UNRWA, claiming that the agency keeps the issue of Palestinian refugees alive. Even before that date, they tried to attack UNRWA offices and seize the lands on which they sit, but they failed. Those who speak of a 3,000-year-old refugeehood cannot dismiss a 75-year-old refugeehood. No Palestinian wants to be a refugee. Do you truly want to end the refugee issue? Remove the boot of occupation from Palestinian land and allow Palestinians the right of return to their homeland,"

#Palestine / Israeli Policy and Permitted Looting Create De Facto Food Blockade in North Gaza

Israel informed its High Court that #IDF lacks effective control over #Gaza and therefore cannot secure humanitarian aid. #Haaretz revealed that the military deliberately allows armed Palestinians affiliated with two prominent Rafah clans to extort "protection money" and loot aid trucks. This systematic blocking and looting occurs with the IDF's tacit approval in a designated "looting zone" near the crossing, resulting in recent UN reports of 97 out of 106 convoy trucks being plundered.

The state maintains it will not allow private merchants to bring food and goods into Gaza, while aid organizations argue this policy, combined with the permitted looting, effectively prevents aid from reaching civilian population.

[…] The petition to the High Court of Justice was filed in March by five Israeli human rights organizations: Gisha, HaMoked (Center for the Defence of the Individual), Physicians for Human Rights, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (#ACRI), and #Adalah. These organizations petitioned the court to order the government and IDF to allow free and rapid passage of all aid shipments, equipment, and humanitarian workers, as well as to significantly increase the amount of aid and goods entering Gaza to prevent famine and humanitarian disaster. The court has held several hearings on the petition and has granted multiple requests by the state to delay its responses.

Register this: “The court has held several hearings on the petition and has granted multiple requests by the state to delay its responses.”

So, Israeli human rights organizations urgently petitioned in March (!) to prevent humanitarian disaster, yet the High Court has repeatedly allowed the state to delay responding while conditions deteriorate. Meanwhile, as documented in the article, the state now claims it cannot secure aid delivery while simultaneously allowing systematic looting in designated "looting zones" - a combination of policies and practices that effectively prevents aid from reaching civilians in need. The state's latest response to the court denies responsibility by claiming lack of "effective control" in Gaza, even as it maintains control over aid entry points and reportedly enables interference with aid delivery.

#Palestine / Ras Jrabah Villagers Appeal Eviction to Expand Dimona City

The Bedouin village of Ras Jrabah, located next to the Jewish city of Dimona in the Naqab (Negev) desert, is facing imminent displacement. Tomorrow, the District Court in #Beersheba will hear an appeal by the village's 600 residents against the state's intention to evict them from their historical family lands belonging to the Al-Huwalah tribe.

The residents have been served eviction orders to vacate the area, consisting of over 10,000 dunams (2,500 acres), to make way for a new neighborhood called Rotem that will be annexed to Dimona. Last year, the lower court ruled that all Ras Jrabah residents must relocate to the Bedouin towns of #Arara or #Kssayir, ignoring their demands to determine their own place of residence.

The villagers have expressed their desire to be integrated into the new urban expansion of #Dimona, either as an independent village under its jurisdiction or as a designated neighborhood catering to their lifestyle. Many Ras Jrabah residents work in Dimona and rely on services provided by the city.

The Regional Council for Unrecognized Villages calls this a case of "ethnic displacement and forced segregation" incompatible with democratic values. They urge solidarity with the villagers at the appeal hearing.

Adalah, the legal center representing Ras Jrabah, views the case as illustrating Israel's #apartheid land regime that systematically segregates and displaces the Palestinian population to facilitate Jewish settlement, violating international law. Previous rulings have shown that constitutional rights in Israel fail to protect Palestinians from such racist policies entrenched in the Nation-State Law.

[…] “Dimona was established on the lands of the Al-Huwalah tribe. It is named after the Al-Huwalah tribe's water well called Umm Dmanah. Initially, there were about 10 people living in huts there, and a #Bedouin boy guarded them for two or three months. They would ask us to bring them water from the well..."

#Israel / Palestinian NGO Challenges Israel's Commitment to ICJ Ruling on Incitement

The #Adalah Center, a Palestinian rights organization, has demanded that Israeli law enforcement authorities investigate statements made by public officials that are suspected of inciting the destruction of a people, as defined under Israeli law. This request comes more than two months after the International Court of Justice (#ICJ) ordered Israel to take measures to prevent incitement to genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and punish those responsible.

Adalah's request includes over 500 examples of inciting statements made by high-ranking officials, including the President, Prime Minister, ministers, Knesset members, and rabbis. The organization cites the Attorney General and State Prosecutor's previous acknowledgment that law enforcement agencies are examining several cases, and is demanding a report on the opening of investigations into these inciting statements.

Adalah's legal director, Dr. Suhad Bishara, criticized the authorities for disproportionately focusing on suppressing the legitimate political free expression of Arab citizens, while ignoring direct calls by officials to kill uninvolved Palestinian civilians in Gaza. She suggests this systemic indifference is linked to the massive civilian casualties, including many children and women, resulting from the assault on Gaza.

By pressuring the authorities to investigate these inciting statements, Adalah is testing Israel's commitment to the ICJ's interim ruling and its obligations under international law to prevent incitement to genocide.

#FDP would immediately implode on any single one of the criteria I listed, so no, even though it might indeed be a joyful spectacle, and Chris and Franca could ride into the sun – literally, as far as I’m concerned, especially since you’re absolutely right about the flipping part.

Also, can’t wrap my head around starting my very own party, though “ #adalah “ would be a really great name; only can’t think of a good German #backronym for it, right now, but just give it time …

As always, a #hybrid solution might be the best one: make #Sahra’s into something worth fighting and voting for! Anything might be better than the smurfy-queer #Ampel (color permuted, blue/white inside, dangerous in every possible way).

Every #leader needs a #sidekick and a #crowd – another #rule, I assume. So yeah, let’s go!
