Hey Fedi, we're looking into getting a small projector instead of a TV. However, I would prefer to have one without "Smart TV" functions or own Android OS or so. I just want to be able to project movies and games from a computer, laptop or phone onto my wall, like in the "good ol' days", because I don't really trust so called "Smart Home" devices. And I don't know how much they might start complaining about compatibility issues when the projector OS considers the connected OS outdated or vice versa. Is this a thing? (I know I had trouble connecting my ancient tablet with the regular Smart TV of a relative a long while ago, even with a cable, or android phones with an apple device etc.)

Obviously the modern ones with great visuals and a good sound only come with Android TV etc. because your average user doesn't want to need a second device, so the only ones I can find so far without one are the ones with mediocre quality in picture and sound and quite some age.

Is there a sort of a middle ground, a non-smart mini projector with good enough quality to replace a regular TV?

Edit: Exchanged "beamer" with "projector" after learning "beamer" is a looks-like-english-but-doesn't-mean-the-same-in-English German phrase...

Does anyone have recommendations for earplugs for very tiny earholes? Every time I go to the doctor and they look in my ears, they go “wow you have really small ear canals” and most earplugs are moderately uncomfortable to unwearable. I had some Etymotics at the metal concert last night which definitely helped with noise reduction but also were moderately uncomfortable. I’d prefer not to go the over-ear route if possible.

Biggest gravel bike ride I’ve done in a long time today (but the shortest of the big rides I have planned). After four hours on double-track rough gravel, my arms were about ready to fall off.

Hello fediverse, I am looking for some advice on a person or company who could help me gather some family documents from the public record.

Specifically, I'm looking for the immigration records for my grandmother - 1930-40s - and my grandparent's marriage license (same time period). I don't know the exact years or locations, but I do have other details to help track it down. I know she was in Hartford, CT in 1954 when my father was born.

I'm not looking for advice on how to do it myself, or places to start researching; I have so much going on right now, time is valuable. I'm looking for advice on how/who to pay to just get it done.

Hey #quilting #QuiltingMastodon, i mostly only quilt boring lines of squares or stripes easily pieced together. I wanted to try my hand at a pattern like this. Is it easiest to do it as long strips or as strips and squares?

Strips will look neater I suspect (esp as I’m bobbins at pattern matching) but joining two edges at a time potentially challenging? Is it even do-able to joint two edges (a short and a long) at the same time or will I swear and unpick a lot?

I have an account with #MyHeritageDNA
A while ago, a 5th-grade cousin contacted me (medium probability of being related as per MyHeritage).
He is from Albania and addresses me as his "lovely cousin".
I already told him about my gene percentages, because he told me his in his 1st message.
Now he wants to know where I was born. He is from "Prishtina capital of Kosova".
I just have a gut feeling. "My lovely cousin" sounds so … oozing and slimy to me.
Am I wrong? What do you think?

So, someone just quote reposted one of my fandom posts on Bluesky. Very cool, since the only interaction I've gotten so far was from other bridged Fedi users. I looked through their profile, and they seem to be into a fandom I'm also into on the side, and I'd like to follow them. But they aren't bridged. I saw in the Bridgy Fed docs that you can send someone a dm through the bridgy-fed thing to ask them to bridge their account so you can follow them.

But my question is, how should I ask them to bridge their account to the Fediverse, or suggest it, or what have you, without it sounding like...proselytizing? Or like I expect them to do it, or else? :blobcatthinkingeyes:
