Beoordeling:

Het lezen van klassieke literatuur is niet eenvoudig. Dat bewijst mijn ervaring met Het verhaal van Orestes van Aischylos. Het eerste deel is moeilijk te volgen, omdat er veel erg lange monologen in zitten. Daarnaast vraagt dit eerste deel ook veel voorkennis van andere klassieke stukken. Gelukkig zit mijn vraagbaak op dit punt naast mij op de bank, maar voor de gemiddelde lezer niet zo fijn.

Het tweede deel begint veel toegankelijker en er is voor een klassiek stuk vrij veel actie. Het laatste deel kent een voor mij onbegrijpelijk eindoordeel door Athene. Ook voor dit deel is voorkennis essentieel om de inhoud goed te kunnen begrijpen, onder andere de relatie tussen koor- en tekstdelen.

Een mooi stuk is het wel, beter dan mijn vorige Aischylos-ervaring, maar te moeilijk voor een gemiddeld publiek.

@antiquidons Even I, as a non-expert on this, found the pace and structure of "Prometheus Bound" a bit off (compared to the other plays in the collection), so no wonder there's a debate on whether it is from #Aischylos or written by someone else. Nonetheless I still like the play. Prometheus, friend of humanity, is one of my favourite figures from Greek mythology and his punishment another real low for Zeus. Have to read Shelley next, I suppose.

@antiquidons Well, part three of #Aischylos #Oresteia "The Eumenids" is actually pretty exciting! The premise is a great ethical dilemma, whose complexity is underlined by the final outcome of the trial itself. Also pretty remarkable is the fact that the gods, especially Apollo, are not the ones persecuted or taking real responsibility here. Orestes is subject to the trial, even with Loxias admitting his influence on him. At least they're also the ones making sure Orestes is not being punished.

@antiquidons Finally finished part two of #Aischylos' #Oristeia today. As with its first part, there is actually not much happening in "The Libation Bearers". Although the text is quite long, it consists of a mere four scenes with Orestes at Agamemnon's tomb, him meeting Elektra - praying & plotting, him getting into the palace & killing Aigisthos off-stage (again?), and then him giving his justifying speech before the Furies appear. It still is a powerful and compelling moral tragedy.

For the last few days I have been in hospital. (Nothing life-threatening, all planned, mind you.) While I enjoy the quiet time to read and, besides some #Aischylos, finally could gobble up Collins' #TheHungerGames for the first time (which I feel has already been analysed extensively for the use of Roman names and themes in the past), I can't wait to leave this place again. Nothing here that I couldn't be done at home, too. Maybe I'll ask my doctor for an early leave? Or for another book?

@antiquidons It took me a (planned) trip to the hospital to finish my reading of #Aischylos 's "Agamemmnon", as the translation on this one is pretty cumbersome - and the most important question I have to ask is "Why is this piece called after the character that barely has any lines instead after the one that speaks the whole time and drives all of the narrative, which is - of course - Clytemnestra?" Saint's "Elektra" was right to focus on the women in this very story! #ReadAncient
