An alabaster monument to George Frere (1597-1655), his gaunt face suggests that it was modelled from a death mask.

Last year we had an amazing exhibition in Museum M in Leuven on the art of sculpted alabaster. This highly malleable mineral is considerably softer than marble and allows for amazing detail. It's known for its translucent qualities and has been used as window material in romanesque churches.

Pompeus Magnus, with #onyx #alabaster for a marble dress

Out of the many impressive nearby statues, this bacon-y one stood out. Not only does it look different, but the colours persisted, to a praiseworthy extent, in a way that nobody could rival after 2,000 years. It was incredible effort however — hence the rarity — to handle natural material that had solid internal colour patterning.

(Correct me if I’m wrong, #marble experts!)

A statue of a head & bust on display at a museum, mounted on a plynth. The chest is covered in a colourful stripey “material” that has lines of pale reds, yellows, beiges, brown and orange. The sculpted clothing appears to drape on the body, with the stripes correctly following the shape as if the material were cloth, not marble.

@TheWildGees Frömel's Moon and Hill from 1971 in the IMMA Collection is a beautiful work. The alabaster sculpture has been displayed close to the natural light from the Royal Hospital's large windows. Sunlight can slightly illuminate the semi-permeable circular indentation in the stone.
