Allegiance, Saison 1, Episode 7.

J'ai pleuré sans discontinuer durant toute la deuxième moitié de l'épisode.
Après les 5 premières minutes, j'ai failli renoncer. J'ai lu tant de choses sur ce qu'ont enduré les autochtones, comme on dit au Canada, les enlèvements systématiques d'enfants (qu'on déculturait dans les centres de dressage chrétiens), les violences coloniales qui se perpétuent jusqu'à nos jours, l'injustice purement raciste dont ils furent victimes. Je sais tout cela. L'épisode ne m'a rien appris. La narration elle-même est "cousue de fil blanc". J'aurais pu écrire chaque scène à l'avance.

Et pourtant.

Je me suis laissé emporter dans ce drame sinistrement familier. Comme dans la plupart des épisodes d'Allegiance, il se dégage une puissance émotionnelle et affective, bouleversante. La série s'engage sans aucune ambiguïté contre le suprématisme blanc, le racisme - à la manière canadienne - ce rêve multiculturel dont on sait à quel point il est menacé désormais, pas seulement en Europe, et beaucoup plus que menacé, carrément détruit, chez le voisin américain.

En regardant la série, diffusée semble-t-il dans de nombreux pays, je me disais, est-ce que les suprématistes blancs la regardent aussi ? Et s'ils supportent de la regarder, sont-ils touchés par cette histoire ? Et s'ils ne sont pas touchés, s'ils adoptent le point de vue du seul personnage ouvertement raciste, la méchante de l'épisode, comment cela se peut-il ? Quel genre de psyché pourrait ne pas être touchée ou bouleversée ? Comment pourrait-on refuser d'être touché, de quelle quantité de haine faut-il disposer pour s'empêcher de prendre fait et cause pour les autochtones ?

J'imagine qu'ils évitent ce genre de récit comme la peste qui, à les en croire, les menace. Parce qu'ils sont possédés par d'autres récits, d'autres images, des signes maléfiques qu'ils projettent à la surface des corps autochtones, des affects de dégoût, de haine, de rejet, qui les saisissent à la seule idée que ces autres puissent habiter un monde dont ils ont pris possession, un monde qu'ils n'ont jamais sincèrement souhaité partager, un monde qui, pour eux, n'est qu'une zone d'extraction assurant leur prospérité blanche. Contre ce récit trop inconfortable de l'injustice faite au subalternes se déploie immédiatement un contre-récit, le récit colonial, le récit suprématiste, qui ne date pas d'aujourd'hui, ni d'hier, mais sur lequel s'est fondé le "nous" qu'ils nomment leur nation.

Et. Le passé n'est pas passé. Il ne cesse d'être présent. Mieux encore :

Where Are You From

After the disaster that was the election last week I saw a handful of people on various social media sites posting things that looked a little like this:

Q: Are you from the United States of America?
A: No, I’m from Massachusetts.

Thinking back to the disaster that was the presidential election in 2016, I was thinking things like that all the time. I remember commenting that watching my country elect a fascist president instantly turned me into a states rights kinda guy who put my state, Massachusetts WAY ahead of my country.

The way it felt in 2016 though… it was nothing compared to the way it feels now. I am not going to say that I am now a secessionist, but if New England, New York, and New Jersey wanted to make a go of it on their own, I’d be down with giving it a shot. You wouldn’t have to twist my arm very hard to get me on board. I would have to check out a map of election returns to see if we could maybe add Deleware and Maryland to the team. I know Virginia went for Harris, but that feels a little like a false flag to me, though that state has been voting Democrat more and more in recent years. I worry about including any state that can be described as Southern.

Maybe this little Northeastern Alliance could work something out with the West coast, assuming the good folks in California, Oregon, and Washington State would want to join us in our brave new world.

Again, I don’t feel as though I am a secessionist. After the bullshit demonstrated in the election last week though, I also no longer feel like an American. Any allegiance I feel at this point is to Massachusetts, not to the United States. If the rest of the country wants to embrace fascism let them. Leave me and my home state out of it.
