Search Engine Land: Bing pushes ad-heavy search results with 7+ sponsored listings. “Microsoft Bing appears to be testing an aggressive new ad display format that dramatically reduces organic search visibility in favor of sponsored content.”
Intenet search reminds me more and more of the end of #AltaVista. Even (or especially) when you were searching for something specific, search results became more and more polluted. If you were lucky you would find something meaningful on page 5. But quite often you would give up and started playing with exclusion
Very frustrating.
I just discovered Old'aVista.

Entered a search term in the updated Vivaldi browser, using #Qwant.
Received a bewildering load of rubbish.
And a smug mention of the New! Improved! #GenAI.
*le sigh*
I really can't be bothered with this crap.
Back to DuckDuckGo... or... yet another?
Please would someone resurrect #Altavista?
I keep trying different search engines to avoid AI* crap and Google.
Oh how I miss #Altavista.
* Grr, that marketty snake-oil term. Not intelligence!
@overholt Ever since AltaVista died, all I ever wanted was a Boolean search of every damn website in the database. Is that too much to ask?
Apparently, yes, that's too much to ask.

When you break the #Google with a legitimate question but #Skynet's AI is too busy searching for #Sarah_Connor to notice that it's been 17 minutes and still hasn't timed out, lolz 🤘💀🤘

#Google force-added #AI to my searches. I can't disable it easily (no setting available). I spend my time trying to fix #climate change, and having an unwanted energy-heavy extra waste for every search is bad. So I've stopped using #GoogleSearch for now, on mobile and on desktop. Google won't notice, but for me it's as sad as giving up on #AltaVista...
(I hava a degree in AI; I've sold products containing AI; I watch my research colleagues doing good things with AI.)
#google #DuckDuckGo #Qwant #Altavista #Lycos
"The usefulness of #LLMs was always overblown, but unless the AI vendors discover a new kind of maths to fix the problem, they’re about to have an #AltaVistaMoment.
And as the LLM-Optimisation industry (#LLMO) assembles its tools, the utility of existing LLMs will plummet like #AltaVista’s, until the only way out is to either abandon them or invent a completely new and more secure kind of model."

Old'aVista: the most powerful guide to the old internet
@muzej
Is there anything like #DEC #AltaVista today? I'd pay money to find a web search engine that doesn't ignore my quoted strings and insists on showing partial matches. #DuckDuckGo doesn't even put full matches at the top.
I am currently testing a #Kagi subscription. It looks promising, but we'll see.
(s n) #RollingStoneMagazine
🔎⛰️ Do you also use AltaVista? Don't forget to put a + before important keywords 😅

@ai6yr I believe #HackerNoon (and maybe the EFF) released a #chromium plug-in that removes SERPs to paywalls in Google, but last I checked it didn't work when using #StartPage or other resources which, sadly, rendered it virtually useless.
Nothing for #Firefox ESR though, and it didn't work well in #Vivaldi when I tried it. Maybe those who ride the MS Windows train have a different experience.
But imagine, instead of having to say "paywall" all of the time, to alert people, we just install tools that completely vaporize sites like the Las Vegas Review Journal and the New York Times, and interdict before their URLs can be displayed in SERPs across any browser or search site?
I guarantee you that no one would miss them. They become immediately irrelevant because they no longer exist to anyone - so their news... Isn't.
Information gathered from the AP Wire and other sources comes from elsewhere instead of those decrepit privacy mining operations, and it's still better up to the minute information than we had when most all of the people were still searching on #Yahoo and #AltaVista.
Sanitized search data and paywall blockers is a great step to initiate for ourselves to break the back of encroaching orwellian dystopia.
I'm interested in hearing about solutions from others that implement or partially achieve these goals to thwart industrial surveillance, and please feel free to boost + sharing is caring, tracking is stealing.

@bontchev interesting for the older folks is that this same graphic would apply to how #AltaVista met its end versus baby Google, sans the AI element.
Sadly in this version, the incumbent has weaseled itself into so many other facets of life that they'll be harder to displace.
The implications of this are stunning. It means that #Google's #enshittified search-results are a choice. Those ad-strewn, sub-#Altavista, #spam-drowned #search pages are a feature, not a bug. Google prefers those results to #Kagi, because Google makes more money out of shit than they would out of delivering a good product

While I'm happy with #DuckDuckGo, I might try out #Metacrawler again, my go to after #AltaVista died and #Google was born.
