Week 17: CatLabs X 80

"Dandelions"

Pinhole macro. Attempt at a closeup pseudo "macro" image shooting CatLabs X 80 film on a ZeroImage 2000 pinhole camera, developed in Caffenol-CH. Taken on "world pinhole day".

Week 16: Shanghai GP3

"Low tide on The Thames"

Pinhole image shot on Shanghai GP3 100 film, with a ZeroImage 2000 camera and developed in Caffenol-CH.

The GP3 film feels like a rebadging of the Lucky SHD film I tried two weeks back. They both have the same thin film base material; the same lack of frame number imprints on the film borders; the same text pattern on the packing paper except for branded ends; the same bad alignment of film and backing paper and bad numbers repositioning on frames 10, 11, 12 giving a cut off the last frame and excessive film leader. Given how overexposed my images came out, I feel this ISO 100 GP3 could even be the ISO 400 Lucky stock rather than their ISO 100 stock. Will have to try the Lucky SHD 100 soon to compare.

Week 15: Ilford Delta 100

"South bank"

Tate Modern from the Millennium Bridge. Pinhole image shot on 25 year expired Ilford Delta 100, with a ZeroImage 2000 pinhole camera, developed in Caffenol-CH. Exposed as if ISO 25, a little light mottled fogging but nothing too terrible in most of the images.

Week 14: Lucky SHD 400

"Solar powered barn"

Pinhole image shot on Lucky SHD 400 film with a ZeroImage 2000 camera developed in Caffenol-CH. This is the first time using Lucky SHD film which I got off AliExpress a few weeks back. The backing paper has an unfortunate printing fault for the center row of exposure numbers. They match Kentmere backing paper perfectly until frame 9 but frames 10, 11 and 12 are incorrectly offset. They appear to have aligned the frame numbers based on the center of the leading digit '1' instead of the center of the pair of digits. This unfortunately meant the last frame was offset enough that it was off the end of the film by perhaps 2mm in my camera. The Lucky SHD film base is much thinner than other films I've used but dried nicely flat.

Week 13: Kentmere PAN 100

"Pylons"

Pylon vs trees. Pinhole image shot on Kentmere PAN 100 film with a ZeroImage 2000 camera, developed in Caffenol-CH. This Kentmere film dries perfectly flat which made it really easy to scan.

Week 11: Rollei RPX 100

"Glasshouse"

Greenhouse at Wisley Gardens. Pinhole image taken on a ZeroImage 2000. This week's film selection was Rollei RPX 100 developed in Caffenol-CH as usual.

Week 10: Kosmo Foto 100

"Corfe castle"

Corfe Castle ruins. Pinhole image taken on Kosmo Foto 100 film, which is another rebadging of Foma stock. Captured on a ZeroImage 2000 camera, developed in Caffenol-CH. This was one of the days of getting stopped by passers by wondering what the little wooden box I'm using as a camera is.

Week 8: AristaEDU 200

"Park bench"

Pinhole image taken in South Hill Park, Bracknell. Using a ZeroImage 2000 camera shooting on AristaEDU 200 film, developed in Caffenol-CH. The tripod mount on my camera failed during the day ripping the fixing screws from the wood. The screws look rather undersized for what they need to cope with but managed a repair after getting home. As a result this shot was taken with the camera freestanding rather than on my normal tripod setup. The trees blurred significantly from the windy conditions.

Week 7: Bergger Pancro 400

"Enveloped"

Pinhole image of plant growing over and around a building. This was shot on Bergger Pancro 400 film with a ZeroImage 2000 camera, developed in Caffenol-CH. This film stock has an astonishingly dense base fog. Seems to be a pretty common complaint. There was also quite a bit of mottling in the fog, but possibly it is a disagreement with Caffenol as a developer in some way. Would need more testing to understand this film I think. Wondering how it would print in the darkroom.

Week 6: Ilford Delta 3200

"Wheel"

Pinhole image in the garage at home to avoid needing to go out in the cold and rainy weather. This week's film choice was Ilford Delta 3200, shot as usual on my ZeroImage 2000 camera and developed in Caffenol-CH. This roll was rather a disaster for a combination of reasons. Overall issue is that the negatives were very thin lacking contrast (this image has been boosted in post). I underestimated / failed to remember the massive reciprocity failure of Delta 3200, should have exposed for x4 the metered level rather than just x2. I think it also needs longer development in Caffenol-CH than my normal 14 minutes. Probably 16-17 would have been better. Finally there's some fog from this roll which had gone through too many airport x-ray machines since I bought it. All that said, I still really like the grainy images you can get from delta 3200, quite different from most common films.

Week 4: Foma Pan 400

"Roots"

Tree roots on the edge of "the sandpit" at Horsell Common. The pit was excavated over decades for its sand and further weather erosion has left trees along the edge with huge parts of their root system exposed. This was also where The Tripods first landed in HG Wells' "War of the Worlds". A 75 second exposure on Foma PAN 400 with a ZeroImage 2000 pinhole camera, developed in Caffenol-CH.

Week 3: Kentmere PAN 400

"Garden path"

Pinhole image taken on the ground in our garden veg growing patch. Taken with a ZeroImage 2000, shooting on Kentmere PAN 400, developed in Caffenol-CH. Quite liked the results with very soft contrast out of the camera, giving good options for post processing.

Week 2: Ilford FP4 Plus

"Sluice gate machinery"

Pinhole image from ZeroImage 2000, shot on Ilford FP4 Plus 125, developed in Caffenol-CH. This was expired film dated from 2001. Exposed at 80 ISO to compensate for the age, but this proved a mistake as images were a bit overexposed.

I usually make one test print before making planned prints, especially after preparing new emulsion to check the correct exposure. This was also the case this time before making the triptych, but the exception was that the test print turned out exceptionally well and I decided to frame it. The photograph shows the print in an A4 frame.

Argyrotype print showing Kraków's Town Hall on the Main Square, bathed in a dreamlike blur. The multi-exposure layers the scene in a delicate tremor, as if time itself wavers. Shadows of passers-by stretch and merge on the pavement, fleeting silhouettes that resemble wandering ghosts, drifting through time. Print is presented in a thin black aluminium frame and white passe partout.
