WordWeavers June 8:
If you have more than one story, what’s your best one & why?

A 12 yr old looking for otters in the south of England finds a dark-haired girl, unconscious, under a fallen tree, the morning after a storm. There is a wrecked sail boat on the beach. It is October 1988. The story follows them for the next ten years, Tom in East Sussex, Theresa in Northern Ireland

Why? 2nd of 5 novels, it spooled out page after page, longhand

"It had, apparently, and quite probably, been the wettest June on record. He had read somewhere that, surprisingly, July was often the wettest month of the year (taking the average over the past thirty or forty years) knocking both December and January into a rain-gauge. This year, it was June."

#WritersCoffeeClub 26 April: What kind of conflict do you find most compelling?

As a writer?

I don’t like any conflict
Especially interpersonal conflict

Which makes it tough trying to write a compelling story

Outside applied conflict, maybe - at least then I can blame it on someone else : the government, the system, etc

Internal conflict - I guess I understand this best : conflicting emotions, hopes and fears

I opened a novel with a scene where the main character is unhappy in his relationship. It just happened to have sex.

Chapter 12
Driving to Edinburgh

They stowed their things in the Golf, said goodbye to Elsie and Robin and headed north.

The weather had eased and a slow thaw had set in. The roads were clear but the country was still carpeted with snow. They did not speak as they hauled up over the Cotswolds and dropped down into the Severn plain to join the M5. Joshua wondered if this was because they had run out of things to say or if it was that companionable silence people talked about. It didn’t matter. He had to keep alert and concentrate on the traffic.

Elyssia looked out of the side window as the English countryside rolled by interrupted by frequent articulated trucks lumbering along the inside lane. The sharp descent from the Cotswolds opened out into the broad river valley with the hills of Wales and the Forest of Dean away to the west. As they travelled north, near Tewkesbury, she caught glimpses of the Malvern Hills where they walked last summer doing the Young Farmers Club sponsored charity event.

The dull plains of the Midlands become the dull coastal plains of Lancashire and then the land begins to buckle and lift as they approach the Lake District and Shap, the highest point on the motorway. They stop at the next service station to stretch their legs.

The previous week had been a whirl of activity.

Today, the volcano had gone quiet, all energy spent, the dramas of magma hidden underground.

Currently refreshing chapter two of a project I've committed to. Outline has been done as well as the character profiles. Concentrating on sense of place and stronger feel of who these characters are today, before moving on to writing chapter three.

My current project takes me as seriously as I take it seriously by myself. I promise!
The on-board computer always wants to be helpful. Seriously!

English Version:
"I'll cut your hair right now!"
"There are suitable scissors in storage compartment 52."
"The hairbands were in storage compartment 51, right?"
"Correct."
"Haoran?"
"I could make you some braids in your hair!"
"I'll braid you around the stanchion in the storage room right now!"
"The first officer can't monitor the flight from there. There's no monitor in the storage room."

Image with paper edges and text. The Text is on German. English Version below.

„Ich schneide dir gleich die Haare!“
„Eine geeignete Schere befindet sich in Staufach 52.“
„In Staufach 51 waren die Haarbänder, richtig?“
„Korrekt.“
„Haoran?“
„Ich könnte dir ein paar Zöpfe flechten!“
„Ich flechte dich gleich um die Stütze im Lagerraum!“
„Von dort aus kann der erste Offizier den Flug nicht überwachen. Es gibt keinen Monitor im Lagerraum.“

'Don't worry, have a carrot'. Not all sayings make it into the history books, but this nearly did.

Are any of your characters trying to change the world?

Yep
Elyssia Gadnall is trying to change the world. That's who she is

Andrew Bridges is trying to change the world because he's a climate scientist ... it's not going well

The others?
They're just trying to survive
