Today’s #TMYK (4/365) is a #BirdFact.

The American Redstart is in the European Expansion of #Wingspan. But it is native to the Americas. Weird.

While confirming that, @Jillianmarisa found the range map and for some reason, it doesn’t like Kentucky?!? Odd island. Anyway there’s your weak fact for the day. No redstarts for youuuu, KY

Colorful range map from all about birds illustrating the various geographies in which the bird can be found through throughout the year. There’s an almost perfect hole over Kentucky.

🌎 American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla)

The American redstart is a small, active bird with a striking appearance. Belonging to the New World warbler family, they are not closely related to the Eurasian and African redstarts. Males (pictured) are mostly black with bright orange patches on their sides, wings, and tail, while females are a more muted gray and yellow. They are known for their constant movement, often fanning out their tails as they dart about in search of insects. These energetic birds are frequently seen flitting through the understory of forests, where they capture their prey with acrobatic aerial maneuvers.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Distribution: Found from southern Canada and the northern United States, through large parts of eastern North America, they over-winter in Central America, the West Indies, and northern South America.

Class: Aves (Birds)
Order: Passeriformes (Passerines/Perching birds)
Family: Parulidae (New World warblers/Wood-warblers)
Genus: Setophaga
Species: S. ruticilla (American redstart)

A striking little songbird, body roughly facing us but looking left, perches against a blue sky among the first budding leaves of spring. A black head and cape are accented with vivid orange patches on the wings and upper tail, merging into a white lower breast.

I decided to pay a return visit to The Ramble in Central Park, NYC. I hadn't been back since last May's Warblerfest. While I didn't catch as many bird species, I did get some interesting shots. See Alt-text for id's and other info.

The #AmericanRedstart is one of those species that moves around so much I have a hard time getting a clean photo.

A female American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) near the Pool. these birds are quite common and the flared tail is characteristic of both genders and is an easy way to identify these birds from a distance.
