I also started reading "Anathem" by Neal Stephenson, having really enjoyed both “Snow Crash" and “Seveneves”.

The story starts first about 20% into the book, and the world building is heavy in the first fifth. It's not a book I'd recommend to someone who's just starting with sci-fi, but I enjoyed trusting the process that I'd understand all the new terms eventually.

If it keeps being this good, Stephenson is 3 for 3 in my book.

@KathyReid So Sandi Toksvig, Alan Garber, and Fabiola Gianotti will presumably be the founders of the First Mathic Age after Putin, Trump, Xi Jinping, Netanyahu and Starmer collectively pull the rug out from under civilization.

Just finished season 2 of AMC’s animated series and it’s some of the beat sci-fi I’ve seen in years if not decades. Reminds me of reading by Stephenson the first time, where he’s like, “Fuck you, keep up. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover!” (Also traces of Sterling and Gibson in it too.)

SO GOOD!

A rampant orphan botnet ecology (ROBE) as from #NealStephenson 's SF novel #Anathem . It is a rather good book.

Neal Stephenson describes how the Artificial Inanity programs of the mid-First Millennium brought about a dark age of the Reticulum.

@Andres4NY Reminds me of the #Anathem term “bulshytt”: “a … term denoting speech … that employs euphemism, convenient vagueness, numbing repetition, and other such rhetorical subterfuges to create the impression that something has been said.”

I'm getting the feel for what The Terrrible Events were.

It took ages to get into Anathem, but halfway through and it's making me think. Working theory - the only way for humans to maintain intelligence and objectivity is to avoid all mass media, especially with moving pictures (tv, social media).

Vediamo come andrà. Tengo le aspettative basse, così magari ci rimango meno male

@vmexell Oh, and on , did you see this? The Teglon could have just been a single tile design.

In #Anathem, Neal Stephenson makes a distinction between syntactics and semantics. A computer (a "syntactic device" in the book) can reproduce the syntax of information, but it cannot assign meaning to anything, let alone words.

Proving that being able to speak is not the same as being knowledgeable, if that needed proving.

#GPT is all syntactics and no semantics.
