Commentaire : Les kashinas figurent les forces animiques et spirituelles liées à toute chose dans le cosmos, d'un objet matériel précis à un concept abstrait et général. Ces entités visitent périodiquement les humains afin de les épauler dans leurs activités quotidiennes et religieuses; eux-mêmes vivent en société. Fabriquées dans des racines de peuplier, ces poupées sont destinées aux enfants Hopis et Zuñis afin de les familiariser avec l'apparence de ces entités et de fixer leur imagination. Elles sont plus spécialement confiées aux filles. En effet, outre le fait d'avoir adopté le système des kachinas — comme tous les Pueblos — ces peuples ont développé une symbolique et un folklore plus élaboré et pratiquent plus spécialement les rites en rapport. Le terme 'kachina' désigne tout à la fois l'entité, les danseurs masqués pratiquant le rituel et vêtus pour leur ressembler et enfin les poupées figurant simultanément entités et danseurs. Ces cérémonies religieuses ont lieu plusieurs fois au cours de l'année. Les couleurs utilisées pour les vêtements et les poupées sont naturellement symboliques, en rapport avec le système de directions spatiales des pueblos. [suite sur Oraedes]
