Okay so like... yes this is an overreach by the admin and yes this is Apple capitulating to fascism and that's bad and all... BUT
This fucking guy (the ICEBlock developer not the poster) had the AUDACITY to go up onto stage at HOPE this year and tell an AUDITORIUM FULL OF SECURITY RESEARCHERS that their concerns over the security, privacy, and legal threat models to his app weren't really a problem, and that his server was "very secure actually"
He was warned over and over about this possibility. People that actually knew what they were doing told him that this was a risk and gave him solid advice on how to account for this and many other issues. There was an entire hour long Q&A session where real anti-ICE organizers asked him how he was going to fix the very real problem of false and mis-reporting on his app bc it was serving to just spread fear more than it was providing any help, and he just didnt listen to them and instead told them he might look into providing training on how to use his app *properly*
Many real security researches asked for specifics on his threat model and security practices for ICEBlock, and he just brushed passed them and basically said "trust me bro". When he did give details on his security practices, like his reasons for not having an android app, it was clear he just didnt know what he was talking about and kept making patently false assertions while dismissing any offers of help from security specialists.
People kept emphasizing that a community-centered app like this needs to be open-source so the code can be vetted and the project can be replicated if his instance ever gets compromised. He completely rejected this notion saying it's *his* app and he can do whatever he wants with it.
Lawyers came up and asked him what his legal threat model was, does he have a warrent canary, and what would he do if *this exact situation* were to happen! He didnt know what a warrent canary was, expressed he didnt have a plan, and continued to refuse help from actual experts.
Nobody should be suprised at this outcome, and people should not spend any energy on this guy. Actual community organizers are saying this app does more harm than good, and the developer has expressed that he just doesn't care. He just has chronic cit-white guy liberal tech-bro product-owner mentality about this app and thinks he knows better than organizers, lawyers, and security researchers.
ICEBlock is not worth saving, and there are much better ICE-response systems out there.
