'It is unthinkable the prime minister would choose a commissioner that did not have the total confidence of the Jewish community.'
Now Frydenberg wants to stack the commission. Anything else, Josh?
"The #Hanukkah attack did not come out of nowhere. #Antisemitism in #Australia was never abstract to me; it was visible and real. As a child, I remember #yeshiva students being harassed while walking down the street wearing #kippot, and car-bombing scares near a #Jewish institution in #Melbourne. Even when I didn’t fully grasp their seriousness, these incidents became part of the background noise of growing up Jewish in Australia.
#Oct7 marked a turning point, when the intensifying antisemitism across the country reached a fever pitch that has not abated. My mother and one of my brothers live within walking distance of Adass Israel #Synagogue, which was set on fire in 2024. In a separate incident that same year, East Melbourne #Hebrew Congregation was also set on fire during a Friday night gathering. These attacks were not distant news stories; they struck close to the places and people I know and love."

GOP Senate contender throws Nazi salute at anti-Israel protest: video
Quoting Amos Goldberg on the #IHRA:
[…] The definition doesn’t deal with antisemitism at all, but rather is a powerful tool to set the boundaries of discourse about Israel, to silence critical voices toward it and toward Zionism, and to restrict freedom of expression.
[…] It completely inverted the meaning of the concept of antisemitism and the meaning of the fight against the phenomenon. For the fight against antisemitism was meant to protect a defenseless minority, sometimes lacking rights, from the tyranny of the state and majority society, and now the ‘fight against antisemitism’ serves as a powerful tool in the hands of Israel as a state and the Jews within it to persecute the Palestinians, who constitute a group without rights, to the point of an effort to eliminate them.
[…] In practice, Israel and its supporters succeeded in shifting the discussion from criticism of the apartheid, the Nakba, the occupation and the annexation (even before the genocide), to the question of whether discussion of all these is legitimate, or whether it is actually an expression of antisemitism.
The IHRA definition weaponizes #antisemitism accusations to protect Israeli state violence against Palestinians. In this essay published on the Israeli website Local Call, #Holocaust and #genocide researcher Amos Goldberg from Hebrew University praises New York City Mayor Zuhran Mamdani for immediately canceling his predecessor’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) antisemitism definition.
Goldberg argues that the IHRA definition - adopted in 2016 and now used globally to regulate speech about Israel - fundamentally distorts what antisemitism means by conflating #Judaism with #Zionism and treating criticism of Israeli apartheid, occupation, and now genocide as inherently antisemitic. The definition has succeeded, he contends, in shifting discourse away from Israeli actions against Palestinians toward endless debates about whether discussing these actions is even legitimate. In fact, Goldberg reminds, Even the definition’s original drafter, Kenneth Stern, later testified against its use as a regulatory tool.
By inverting antisemitism from a concept meant to protect vulnerable minorities into a weapon wielded by #Israel to suppress Palestinian rights and silence their supporters, the IHRA definition has caused “incalculable damage” to genuine efforts against antisemitism while enabling actual antisemites - particularly on the American right - to flourish as long as they support Israeli policy.

Antisemites in Israel lash out at Mayor Mamdani whose inauguration was presided over by a leading US Jewish Senator (Bernie Sanders) and serenaded by a children's chorus led by a famous Jewish actor and Yiddish singer (Mandy Patinkin). American Jews support Mamdani and the violent extremists in power in Israel do not speak for us.
Here is an excellent example of how many otherwise intelligent Australians have lost the plot.

"[T]he willingness of #activist networks to platform individuals accused of endorsing #violence exposes a moral double standard.
“Groups that claim to stand for #humanrights cannot at the same time excuse or justify attacks on #Jews,” he said. “There is no #progressive exception for #antisemitism.”
#Jewish advocacy organizations have long warned that extreme #antizionist rhetoric can slide into explicit antisemitism when Jews are collectively blamed, dehumanized, or targeted for violence."
Today in Labor History January 7, 1919: Argentina’s "Bloody Week" (AKA Tragic Week) began in Buenos Aires. Workers were demonstrating for the 8-hour work day. The authorities opened fire, killing four and wounding 30. Clashes with the authorities on the day of the funerals left another 50 dead. In response, they called for a General Strike. Paramilitary groups attacked workers in collaboration with the police. By January 16 the authorities had fully crushed the strike, killing as many as 1,500 and wounding 2,000. Many of the victims were Jewish-Russian, Italian, Spanish and Chilean anarchist immigrants targeted by racists and anti-Bolshevik hysteria. Many were executed without trial after surrendering. The typical workday was 12 hours. However, many workers were forced to toil for up to 16 hours per day.

"And in fact, doing that again and again and again actually undermines Jewish safety because it sends the message that people who have a problem with the state of Israel, therefore, also should have a problem with Jewish New Yorkers because, essentially, they are one and the same."
Peter Beinart notes that Zohran Mamdani is under attack by "establishment Jewish organizations. And these attacks are really predictable and, honestly, they’re really brain-dead." These organizations are accusing Mamdani of antisemitism. In Beinart's view,
"It’s just nonsensical to equate Jewish New Yorkers as a group of people with the state of Israel."

"For years, #ImranAhmed has presented his research on how #techplatforms enable the spread of #antisemitism to receptive audiences across the ideological spectrum.
He’s worked with the #AntiDefamationLeague and #JewishFederations of North America; the latter credits Ahmed with the backbone of much of its own policy proposals[...]
He’s joined #Republicans in advocating for an end to #Section230, a law granting special protections to #socialmedia platforms. During the first #Trump administration, on the strength of his research, the #British-born Ahmed received a priority visa as an “alien of extraordinary ability” — the so-called “#Einsteinvisa,” after the German-born #Jewish physicist.
All of that only added to Ahmed’s befuddlement when, just before Christmas, the current Trump #StateDepartment announced it would be revoking his #visa because of what #SecretaryofState #MarcoRubio tweeted were “egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
