Another entry in the niche blog post chronicles: How to install Guacamole for remote desktop connections to Kali Linux.

This is a combo post with both context and guide. Its also the first in a series on migrating from Vagrant/VMWare/Ansible to Proxmox/OpenTofu/Ansible. In it I work through some issues of building Guac on Ubuntu 24.04 and installing TigerVNC on Kali.

This post is a stepping stone on the way to resolving the issue of frequent Kali crashes, though I think of it as only a preparatory step as it deals with a niche issue where SPICE doesn't work for me on Proxmox. I hope to get on to the IaC stuff soon.

Because #VMwareWorkstation seems to hate running linux guests at the moment, I've taken to running my vms from my home #libvirt server and accessing them through #ApacheGuacamole running in #podman. I'd like to thank #broadcom for directing me towards more interesting and stable technologies.

Somehow #ApacheGuacamole is causing my #libvirt vm to segfault when it connects using vnc. Other vnc clients don't do this. Computers are amazing.

Well, after a lot of pulling my hair trying to figure out why #KASM Workspaces was not connecting via RDP to my #Ubuntu desktop VM, it turns out that there's an #ApacheGuacamole issue with the graphics pipeline that is the culprit. Oh well, at least the problem is not that there's an ID-10-t on my side. LOL

It is very similar in Remmina, but you host it on your server and can connect to all remote desktops from your browser, even tablets and phones.

I discovered that the latest version of #kasmweb supports a Workspace that's just RDP or VNC (kasmvnc) to a #VM (or a cloud VM). It was easy to configure and I am getting the same performance as when using #ApacheGuacamole.

Was playing around with #ApacheGuacamole this evening. Nice product. I did have trouble with two things:

1. SSH keys. Didn’t get it working. Saw that Guacamole doesn’t support ed25519, but couldn’t get legacy keys working either

2. Ubuntu VNC worked reasonably well. But as soon as the client locked the screen, VNC stopped working. A bug, it seems. Found a command to wake it up via SSH. Regarding this workaround, see no. 1 above

Next I’ll try out RDP on to both Linux and Windows VMs. Maybe Linux RDP will be better than VNC.

Plan is to set up an OpenVPN (certificate and pass phrase) to Guacamole (pass phrase and TOTP) in DMZ vlan which has FW allow rules to specific hosts and ports in other vlans … all of which I only enable if I am traveling.

The coolest thing about having #ApacheGuacamole in my #HomeLab is that I can use my #Proxmox VMs with #ZorinOS #Linux, or #Windows11 from any #VR app that includes a browser, such as #MeetinVR, #MetaQuest Home, #EngageXR.

Though my primary #XR4Work app is #ImmersedVR, that works with Windows, Linux or Mac, it's good to have options.

Other apps such as #vSpatial or #VRDesktop work great but only for Windows.

#HorizonWorkrooms does not work because it requires a GPU that my VMs don't have.
