Hype for the Future 96F: McDowell County, West Virginia

Introduction Geographically the southernmost of the fifty-five (55) counties representing the State of West Virginia, McDowell County is located deep within the Appalachian Mountains, west of the Bluefield area and east of Pikeville, Kentucky. Today the poorest county in the United States of America per capita, the region is historically known for coal mining operations, along with nearby regions in southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. The coalfields are of […]

Hype for the Future 96B: Mercer County, West Virginia

Introduction One of the southernmost counties of the State of West Virginia, the community of Bluefield is primarily located within Mercer County, including the site of Bluefield State University. Unlike many other colleges and universities, though like many of the regional institutions throughout the Southern United States, car dependency is completely inevitable at Bluefield State within the area. Princeton is located further north along Interstate 77, and the Town of Athens, even further […]

Hype for the Future 96A: Highland and Bath Counties, Virginia

Overview — Highland County One of the least populated and highest-elevation counties in the eastern United States, Highland County, Virginia, is located relatively near the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the intersection of Routes 220 and 250. The Monterey Inn is the chief place to stay within the county, which may contain limited cell service as a result of being physically located within the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ). The National Radio Quiet Zone, originating at the sensitive Green […]

Oh the delights of a snow day in #Appalachia - making snow angels with the kids, working on a snow castle... for ten minutes, until the leashless dogs of the pistol-packing meth head next door come over to play, knocking over my boy and freaking out our dog.

Good news, everyone! As I do my 4 AM "drag my ancient ass out of bed to put more logs in the stove" routine, I see that the temps outside have dropped low enough for the leak in the studio ceiling to stop dripping in! #Appalachia #morenewsfromnowhere

It's great seeing my kids scale down their dreams to, say, someday being a waitress or a volunteer firefighter or trash collector. Right now my boy is using a duplos kit originally meant to form Elsa's ice palace to make a Sonic drive-in stall.

Hello #Fediverse! 🔭👀

Climbing back in the #Crowsnest.
Third (or fourth?) time's the charm! I’ve had previous incarnations of crowsnest.social that unfortunately succumbed to technical difficulties, but after some serious 'dry dock', this version of the ship is hopefully in for some smooth sailing. 🌊

Cold #Appalachian winters have a way of slowing everything down. You are forced to sit back and let the day take you where it wants to. The #wind cuts sharp, the #ice grows intense, the #snow watch increases but the mountains go quiet, and the kitchen becomes the warmest place in the house.

This is when I am taken back to my #childhood and a favorite meal my #grandmother would make: chicken and dumplings. These days, I don't eat the chicken but the meal has simple ingredients that are mixed by hand and simmered slow. It fills the bungalow up with smells and memories of home. It’s the kind of meal meant to be eaten from a bowl held in both hands, steam rising, worries settling. No better vessel than my Momma Bear soup mug.

This is #Appalachia. This is simple good #food. No fancy extras. Just comfort, patience, and something hot on the stove while winter does what winter does.

Some traditions don’t need changing. 💙

A close-up photo of a white ceramic mug (Momma Bear) filled with creamy chicken and dumplings. Large, soft dumplings sit in a thick, pale broth, lightly sprinkled with black pepper and a touch of old bay seasoning on top. The mug rests on a dark, marbled kitchen countertop, and the surface of the soup looks warm and comforting, suggesting it has just been served.

Hey everybody! So, we're trying to figure out this Mastodon thing, and quickly discovering that it's going to take a bit to figure out the user experience here. That said, Appalachia Today is a website devoted to Appalachian news, travel, events, culture, and history. We launched about a month ago, and we're trying to expand our social presence. Check out the site at AppalachiaToday.com, and if you live in or care about issues in the Appalachian region, follow us here!

I get why it’s hard for people to understand why I’m proud to be from #WestVirginia and equally proud to be from the general region of #Appalachia. Even I used to tell people I was from South Florida rather own up to being #Appalachian.

I get that you see bad things about us on the news and you have your tidy little stereotypes about #hillbillies and #rednecks. But I’d certainly rather be known as a union man than a fascist, and my blood, my family, is much of what drives my own politics.

The calm before the storm feels extra loud up here in #Appalachia. 🌙✨

The sky is clear, the stars are sharp, and the air has that hushed winter stillness that is so loud. Extremely loud. IYKYK. The yard tells a different story. Tonight the machines are parked like they are sleeping, fresh tracks in the dirt, and fresh straw laid down to try to prevent massive run off.

I have no clue when the landscaper is coming to pick up his equipment. It's been over a week since it's been parked and with the ice #storm coming, doubt he gets it anytime soon. Weird trust.

We’re trying to stay one step ahead of the aftermath of an epic one-in-a-lifetime ice storm (melting, lots of melting) by grading, moving, fixing, prepping because once the ice melts everything changes. Right now it’s peaceful… but you can almost feel the storm gathering in the distance. I know it's headed our way but, dang, it's eerie tonight.

The quiet moments between the chaos.
The kind where I pause, look up, and remember that I chose this #mountain life. 🖤🌲

A nighttime outdoor scene in Appalachia. The sky is dark and full of scattered stars. Tall leafless trees rise up on the right side, glowing with warm yellow light from a nearby street lamp. In the lower right foreground, two pieces of heavy yard equipment, one small excavator and another machine, are parked on freshly disturbed ground. The dirt shows deep tire tracks and uneven grading. The overall scene feels quiet and still, like a pause in the work before bad weather arrives.

#Winter storm prep level: no electricity, no panic, just vibes ❄️😎

Gas cans lined up like soldiers. #Generator ready to scream. Snacks secured. If the power goes out, we’ll still have heat, hot food, and questionable decision making abilities after drinking all the #moonshine in the bungalow.

Not saying we want the lights to go out… but we are absolutely ready to outlast it in comfort. Locals are taking bets on how many days without electicity. They are saying 7 days. I am thinking 5 days. Stay safe, stay warm, and remember: preparation is just anxiety with better equipment + alcohol and books.

(And, no, this isn't staying in the carport.... it has already been moved to it's "housing unit".)

A white pearlized Ford Flex is parked on a gravel driveway beside a house. In front of the vehicle, nine bright red gasoline containers are lined up neatly in a row, each with a black spout. To the right of the car sits a portable black generator with orange wheels. The scene appears to be outdoors on a cold, overcast day, with bare trees, fallen leaves on the ground, and no snow yet visible. The setup suggests preparation for a winter storm and potential power outages.
