Speaking of "collector" ghouls, I almost pissed my pants laughing when one very arrogant twat got scammed for the "original copy" of Akalabeth he kept vacuum-packed and hidden away instead of dumping the disk image.

The guy had paid 4,000 EUR for it. You can find the thread on Vogons. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Alas: I needed to do at least one more post on PRISM (the real life treasure hunt from 1982), as there's a version I didn't know about for Atari computers. The images are different enough to cause some of the potential clues to radically change.

Here's my last post on PRISM (for now), the Apple II game with clues to find real-life treasure. I work out how the game is likely hinting how to find a burial spot and I find an unexpected clue in the game's background sounds.

Finally had some time to fiddle with my a2pico with the mouse card firmware - mouse wasn't working, figured out I had to set the jumper to USB power and suddenly I was using a mouse on my Apple IIe with A2Desktop!

Teenage me would have been amazed a IIe GUI could look as good as an early Mac, old current me is also amazed! Thank you to all oldish nerds who decided these old machines still deserved new upgrades.

I had to modify the plist and shell config scripts I'd setup on the Mac since "upgrading" to macOS 26 Tahoe to get this working without gripes in the terminal.

The study of PRISM continues, as I go back over some history of Masquerade (which the game was heavily inspired by) and try to get at the central question of: how do you specify the exact location of three different buried treasures with 1982 technology?

Few things go well the first time you try them. It's a part of the iterative learning process: when you don't know what the fuck is going on under the hood you have to investigate. Scratch your head. Be confused.

Or you could install an UthernetII in your #AppleII and it works the first time without thinking about it.

For once, the latter happened.

I'm interested of people's opinion on the Micro vs full-size SD card after reading the article (especially the opinion of people who would be interested by the device).

I've been thinking about the best way to make an enclosure that would fit every possible version of the #BurgerDisk. I'm starting to be happy with the results!

@europlus Apple II history question: Do you remember the boot loader for the Microcom versions of Flight Simulator? (It was only Microcom, I think?)

It might only be cracked versions, or some of them. But I'm trying to get a screenshot or anything of the boot loader that does this:

1. No scroll
2. No "]" prompt at the bottom
3. The "Apple //e" or similar stays on screen
4. A rotating cursor then appears on the top line, maybe from both sides, not sure
5. The "Apple //e" logo is then overwritten by the spinning cursor, in quite an impressive display

The rotating cursor is just a moving set of the symbols / - \ | / - \ | / etc โ€ฆ

I forget what text gets replaced, maybe it's the same text, or maybe it goes blank. Probably.

The graphics mode then engages and a title screen comes up.

I'm not doing any PRISM updates today, but if you haven't seen it yet, you can read my coverage of Alkemstone, another buried object with information buried in an Apple II game (this time a proper game! ... kind of).

#DemonsWinter is a game about a band of kobold marauders who have to be stopped. There is no demon and it's not winter. At least for 90% of the game. Yes, 38 years ago, it was still possible to expect patience from one's audience.

P.S. I annotated my playthrough "live" here earlier. In case you're interested, check the tag of the game's title.

Teaser: the v2 enclosure will come with an indentation so that one will be able to stick a little ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Apple logo!

#BurgerDisk #AppleII #RetroComputing

A picture of my device, on top of two floppy disk drives. It integrates quite well, with the same logo as the drive beneath it. One can see the microSD slot, which is usable with just your nail, even short.
2026-01-23

I've released #BurgerDisk v1.1. The PCB, enclosure and firmware are updated.
The main difference is that the new PCB is able to withstand being plugged into an old DiskII controller without frying and without a configuration jumper.
The second difference is that the microSD slot is now in the front of the enclosure.

I expect to release v2.0 quite soon, with a functionally identical PCB, redesigned with Kicad. It will come with another enclosure update, allowing for a sturdier mount.

The v1.1 firmware is compatible with the v1.0 PCB and vice versa.
