#Arachnids

Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans). Southern US. They like moths, flies, herbivorous insects... Some gardeners like them for natural pest control. They bite which may cause swelling, but they are NOT venomous. If someone likes birds, but hates spiders, just tell them to think of spiders as bird food . #arachnids #biology #nature #gardening #photo #wildlife

#MiteMonday: a tiny _Podocinum_ mite found under a rock. Its extremely thin elongated front legs have forked hairs at the end, and it seems to use these legs like antennae to navigate.

A small relatively hairless reddish-brown mite reaching out with extremely long front legs, so thin they are almost invisible except where the light catches them, towards some random debris on the underside of a rock.In this photo you can see more of the bristles on its body and the forked hairs at the end of each front leg.The mite approaches and tentatively touches a white snail shell, which is several times its size but still extremely tiny.

“Most people, when they see one spider they start screaming. And here, we have 100,000 spiders and everybody wants to learn about them — to me that is hard to believe.”

Agreed!!

(04 Nov) World’s biggest spiderweb discovered inside ’Sulfur Cave’ with 111,000 arachnids living in pitch black

A giant colonial spiderweb in a sulfuric cave on the border between Greece and Albania may be the largest ever found — and it was built by spiders we didn’t know liked the company of others.

I thought I was just taking photos of remaining leaves on Prunus tomentosa Nanking Cherry in the afternoon light. But, once I saw them closer on the computer screen I realised at least some of the leaves are no longer attached to the plant- some critter has made a wooly haven for ..? eggs (spider) or for their own transformation (caterpillar)? if all goes well over winter, new life will emerge from those leaves in the spring.. #nature #inverts #insects #arachnids #garden #Alberta #photography

A cluster of around a half dozen leaves clings to the tip of a thin green-brown erect twig, with several more twigs reaching up or sideways nearby, including a forked branch forming a bit of a Y running off the image to the right. The somewhat rough leaves are smallish, oval/oblong with toothed edges and deeply incised veins giving them a quilted look. they are uneven in colour, greenish gold overall, some spots green, some dull orangey with dark shadows below and in some of the veins. A closer examination shows some wooly/sily stuff between a couple of the leaves, and we can surmise that some sort of moth cocoon or spider egg mass has been placed inside with the leaves pulled together around it. Several of the leaves are attached to the mass by their tips and we note the stems that would have joined them to the branches are free in the air. Background is a mix of blue sky and green-brown trees blurred into wide irregular vertical stripes.

This group of baby jumping spiders is doing great so far. It's been a bit of a distraction watching them stalk and catch fruit flies, but 🤷‍♂️. #spiders #jumpingspiders #arachnids #spidersofmastodon #SpidersOfTheFediverse
