The narrow courtyard is out of focus and covered in rubble. A low outbuilding in the back has an open door. The left wall is blank, on the right, the main house, a tree growing too near the wall. There’s another wrought iron door in a different pattern set into that wall.

A small archway, about head height, made of grey marble carved into the grey marble base of a neoclassical official building. It’s walled in at the back of a shallow recesses and has, incongruously, a thick metal pipe emerging from it, bifurcating and sealed at both ends. I think it must be a fire hydrant.

An elaborate ironwork gate of spears and circles topped with a scroll in front of a building site. It’s framed to that the through the left side of the gate you can see the marble of a large neoclassical building and on the left the corrugated steel panel closing off the building work within. There’s some leaf and urban litter on the marble paving stones enclosed.

An elaborate panel of late 19th Century ironwork painted grey or faded to grey and depicting two winged sphinxes face to face with a stylised plant between them. Behind, the greenery of a yellow-lit garden can be made out. It’s the garden of the Numismatic museum in Athens, the former Heinrich Schliemann mansion.

I love the ornate architectural details all over San Francisco. This was just a random building in Potrero Hill.

A balcony window in a neoclassical building above a door. The doorway has a simple metal barred door on it, with a touch of scrollwork, and is topped with an awning, the kind made of long rounded panes the way a cloth awning might be. The balcony is made of elaborately scrolled cast iron, an oval central panel with stylised leaves and decorative work around it. There are several pots of plants. The window has ironwork security shutters too, now open, of simpler scrollwork, casting their shadows on the plaster walls. The building looks a bit run down, with graffiti in the lower right hand corner of the image, but is clearly inhabited and cared for.
