I was teaching a class about architectural photography today, and I asked one of my students whether they were more interested in close-in details or broader compositions. They said details. So my challenged to them was that they could make their detailed shots, but they also had to give me context, and I wanted to see it in the form of either diptychs or triptychs. This is one of the compositions I quickly assembled to illustrate what I meant.

This is a colour sunrise photo in landscape format of a colonial era historic clock tower with contempory high-rise building in the background. Singapore (2015).

Below and to the right of centre is a square, white clock tower with a round dial clock in each corner, with two clock faces in view: one facing the camera and one viewed side-on. The clock face is white with the time in black Roman numerals, the clock hands also in black. The time indicated is nineteen minutes past eight. Above are square colums with a few bells visible inside. On top is a copper-green domed roof. In the background and immediatly behind, perhaps one km away, is the tall, rectangular tower of a high-rise hotel. On top of the high-rise is a large arched and slightly surfboard shaped deck that stretches from beyond the tower to the left, over the tower and off the photo to the right. The top of the deck has railings around the edge, made to look minature by the size of the deck. There are some one story structures and further to the right numerous small palm trees. Surrounding this scene and in the background is a dull orange sky, coloured by the low morning sun and probably atmospheric pollution.

The location: Marina Bay, Singapore. The clock tower belongs to the Victoria Theatre and the high-rise is the Marina Bay Sands hotel, casino and shopping centre.

This is an abstract black and white photo in landscape format of a row of three sets of windows left standing on a demolition site. To Kwa Wan, Hong Kong (2017).

In the centre of the image is the row of windows, left standing on the first floor with nothing in view beyond. The windows are set in a thick concrete, weathered and decaying rectangular frame. Each set of the windows is rectangular with two arranged vertically next to each other, with the third set horizontally above the lower two. This pattern is repeated in all three set of windows. The centre two vertical windows are open. Above the windows is a thick concrete lintel with a metal railing stretching across its length: suggesting it might have been a balcony. At each end of the railing is a small amount of wild vegetaion growing. Surrounding this scene is a white background, devoid of any detail, suggesting an overcast sky.
