Someone here was lamenting a dearth of top-quality hand made Canadian art papers. I know, right?

Well, here's something to try - made in Montreal!

Tuesday is coming! \o/πŸ’ƒπŸ’πŸŽ‰

… when I take a break from what seems like *years* of political watchfulness, set some additional mastodon filters, & get back to enjoying the serendipity of social interaction here. Can't wait πŸ€—

Eventually I'll have to check in on what our politicians are doing. And some of it will find its way thru the filters. But my May priorities do NOT include activism. Just #rest, #artmaking, and work.🀞

That's hoping that #DougFordIsCorruptAF plays along πŸ˜– #theBestLaidPlans

7cm thumbnails, based on my photos of last year's red tulips.
Thinking about composition and colour. I do love colour πŸ€—

This year's tulips are still just green shoots.

Current work-in-progress: background for collage - acrylic on an accordion book of brown kraft paper.
Up next: collaging some random white-ish elements, and adding scribble marks.
Working up to: deep red tulips, eventually, I think! 🀞

We'll see what happens. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Accordion book, partially opened out, on brown paper and white shower curtain to protect floor. Portion shown covers about 1 x 5 feet. Framed around two edges by white kitchen cabinet fronts.

Large abstract strokes of black, white, muted light blue, indigo and "green earth" cover the paper randomly. Also, some indigo dots made with jumbo bubblewrap.

Creating collage fodder - getting ready for tulip season.

Managed to spill half a bottle of acrylic ink: Quinacridone Red of course, a staining pigment. Fortunately, my entire work surface is covered in silicone sheets, not a drop on my tables or my turkish carpet.*

* why, oh, why,do I have a turkish rug in my studio area? Printmaking is hard on the feet - but, really, for inspiration, of course!

#printmaking #gelliprint #gelprinting #collage #artmaking

Ten 9x12" sheets of medical exam table paper and rice paper, spread out on my studio floor, mostly on a polyethylene desk protector. All bear messy, abstract shapes in red, pink, white and light purple - streaks, dendrities, and the un-planned red ink blots of course 🀭

Under all that is my lovely, dark denim blue turkish rug with a dusty looking repeating medallion pattern (the more elaborate patterns are at the borders :-).

This is the west half of my kitchen, by the way. I'm a much better artist than a cook 🀭 (and that's not saying much, in fact 🀣)

I took an art class this week, online, and am excited about the new dimensions it's adding to my way of art-making. This has quite a different feel to my two previous attempts to paint this (abstract, emotional) subject.

I'm celebrating the ambiguity, the depth, the move away from narrative and illustratoon \o/

Edit: The videos from the class may still be up here: pages.art2life.com/live/

Mixed media on paper 8x12"
(Two pages in an art journal)

In a hazy, vaguely landscape-ish field, 5 darker shapes of different colours and sizes float and consider interacting. One object looks like two small red-hot chili peppers. Up close, on and between the shapes, you'll see small, pale marks of various kinds, which my teacher calls "the quiet conversation".

Ooh! A free workshop from respected teacher & abstract artist Nicholas Wilton!

"This is the year everything can change. Your Art & Your Life.

It’s no accident that you landed right here, right now. … This is your invitation to overcome whatever stands in your way to making art."

βž” If you'd like to get back into art, this is a gentle way to do it! See you there!

watching DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE on

I've seen it before but now it has even more significance in a way. What a special and wholly unique person and artist.

A teacher sent me an email: "You might not need any more references for your thesis but I thought of you when I saw this exposition."

Not only is the exposition very useful as a reference, I'm also ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED by it!

Oooh, look what I found!

Rummaging around for a blank notebook for a new project, I came upon this blank 7x9" japanese rice paper accordion book!

I got it second-hand, somewhere. It'll be easy to add the missing back cover.

Yum!

On a small white computer table:

cream-coloured paper accordions across the foreground; timer, computer and podcast paraphenalia, in the background, are all white and aluminum-coloured. A small timer and pencil case add a touch of red.

It's unusual for me to shoot an all-white photo, but eventually even that happens, LOL.

I've started watching on 3Masterclass. Although he's not a sophisticated "orator," I find myself loving his ideas. He keeps it simple and humble. He's practical and humble. And what he says makes a lot of sense in terms of the kinds of films he makes.

My landlord allows nails and screws, but nothing can be stuck to the walls. This is a pain in my studio workarea.

Voila!
My shower curtain / magnet bar hack :-)
(Description in #AltText)

(This is my 2nd shower curtain hack. I use another colourful one, with big bold designs, as a video background. Cheap and cheerful! :-)

#printmaking #artmaking #smallspacesolutions

A colourful vinyl shower curtain hangs on the wall behind my studio table, on nails.

Behind it are two meter-long magnet bars, one above the other. They're meant to be stuck to the wall. But instead, I've stuck them to the shower curtain using big magnets in front.

So now, above my work table: many, overlapping work-in-progress gelli prints and drawings to inspire whatever I do next. They are held on with neodymium magnets βœ”

Predominant colours in this photo are white, turquoise, blue. Prints and drawings are turquoise, blue, pink, purple, yellow.

Various #ThingUmbrella and #GenArtAPI updates from this week:

- Added null pointer checks & guards in thi.ng/wasm-api. This also includes support for structs with fields using Zig-style optional pointers.
- Updated the thi.ng/wasm-api-bindgen code generator for #TypeScript to produce smaller code for structs using many string fields
- Did major ground work on #Zig #WebAssembly bindings of core thi.ng/genart-api functionality (see small demo below)
- Fixed/updated/simplified time provider logic
- Updated the debug time provider with its FPS analytics/visualization overlay, now computing moving min/max and moving average (default period = 200 frames) and the viz is dynamically/smoothly rescaling to current peak
- Released new GenArtAPI v0.9.0

As for the Zig/WASM example: This is only interesting from a technical POV, no visuals here! All canvas drawing and parameter declarations/evaluations are done via Zig, using the aforementioned thi.ng/wasm-api infrastructure to provide a new API module which can be seamlessly used with the other hybrid WASM API modules, here for DOM creation (thi.ng/wasm-api-dom) and to handle Canvas2D drawing (thi.ng/wasm-api-canvas).

At the moment, this GenArtAPI WASM module is still a fixed part of this example, but will eventually be extracted & distributed as separate package.

Demo (with param editor):
demo.thi.ng/genart-api/param-e

Choose one of the two GUI implementations, then make any parameter changes and you should see the new values applied immediately (btw. the demo is likely not very usable on mobile)...

So, after trying some other stuff, I'm going to stick to videos about art techniques again today.

I figure it's the dopamine without the calories or addiction factor. Or … well … ok, but it seems a more constructive addiction?
