My favourite major label-backed 80s jazz artist? Hands down, it would be #ArthurBlythe. He wove a huge, breathtaking sound on #LennonAvenueBreakdown, drawing from trad swing, bebop, r&b, AfroCuban jazz, free jazz and beyond. “Odessa” is my pick of the bunch, what with its mysterious Eastern European motif and amazing #JamesBloodUlmer solo. But the whole album and his later Blythe Spirit and Illusions LPs are beautiful, inspired works that still stand tall.
