@thebiologistisn This is really interesting. It would be nice to try, but it is almost impossible for private person to order any seeds outside Europe due to need for phytosanitary certificate. But I know that here in Finland there has been first Asimina triloba bearing fruits in cold greenhouse conditions, so maybe there is hope for domestic seeds for adventurous growers.

I found this red long-horned beetle (Obrium rufulum) way down yonder in my pawpaw patch. Per BugGuide its larvae bore into dead twigs of ash, linden, and oak, but there's no mention on internet of what adults do with their days, other than often being found on their hosts and looking pretty. Excited to see the native eastern North American pawpaw blooming. Asimina triloba has a beautiful flower pollinated by flies. Smells yeasty. Paw paw trees are typically understory trees in mesic and riparian habitats. They prefer to be near rivers or streams. The fruit matures in middle to late September. My mother-in-law (who is a great cook and baker) once asked my father-in-law his opinion on a cake she made. He said, "It's OK." She said, "You are so hard to please."

At Christmas, I brought some pawpaw jam and a pawpaw cream pie: he said the pawpaw jam is one of the best things he's ever eaten... in. his. life! I was surprised because he didn't rave over the fresh pawpaws I brought them in September; they liked them but didn't seem to _love_ them like he loves this jam I made. So, of course I made some more and gave him two-thirds. I don't know about how hard he is to please, but he IS hard to shop for since he can and does get things he wants for himself. The best thing to get him is some kind of novel experience or item he doesn't know about yet. KSU's pawpaw jam really made him light up.

@couchmike You and I are the first two people in the Fediverse posting about Pawpaws. The two trees I planted last fall did well, so I decided to plant a dozen more this year. Hoping for fruit in 2-3 years, will be attending Ohio's Pawpaw Festival faithfully each September until then! This year, I introduced two coworkers, my husband, and his family to pawpaws. People keep asking how they should #Winterize their #NorthAmericanPawpaw #AsiminaTriloba trees: if they're in pots (fall planting is fine so there's not much reason to keep them in pots), don't let the roots freeze, if they're in the ground, just paint the trunks with half water half interior white latex paint to reflect the winter sun to prevent southwest injury caused by repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
