#AssetDenial

@gytisrepecka @da5nsy OFC!

  • I'm the last one questioning that.

I hope that @dotmeow can offer #domains on at-cost basis for #members / users, because once a #gTLD is setup and running the cost of infrastruture to keep it up - even if it were €10k+ per month - is miniscule when divided by the amount of users and registrations.

  • I do however hope that .meow will take lessions and have fundamental policy changes: Banning #DomainParking and #DomainSquatting as well as #auctions of highly-sought-after #domains, because it is a net negative for #users, the #TLD and the rest of the internet if big companies can occupy large swaths of the internet just to commit "#AssetDenial" under dubious pretenses (#Trademark) to bad (anti-competitive) behaviour.

Having domains that are not actually being used or being merely registered for resale being repossessed and registrars of said domains banned would be something I'd love.

@neuralreckoning not to mention many journals are absurldy #paywalled (#Elsevier are just the greediest #rentseekers!) whilst also charging for #submissions to the point that some are existing mostly as a means of #corporations to commit "#AssetDenial" against competitiors by #publishing their own research, thus enshuring the #competition can't #patent a specific product.

  • Don't ask me how I know...

@JessTheUnstill @Pibble

If your threat model is "theft of devices by cops", make shure to be able to commit #AssetDenial or have nothing on the devices they can use!

  • Burner #StupidPhones and (e)SIM-Cards are cheap. keep them switched off and the battery pulled out!

I'd consider wasting €20 on a #StupidPhone, €20 on a rewriteable #eSIMcard and €10-20 on an #eSIM a "necessary expense" and I'd gladly show people how to get that stuff and not burn their opsec/anonymity by doing so...

@landley @burnoutqueen Yeah...

#GPLv3 is a desaster as it's 99% ideology and 1% license text and alongside #AGPLv3 completely ignores the reality of how #licensing and #patents and #IP works.

  • Not that I like the status-quo, but we'd rather see businesses steer clear of anything GPLv2+ or GPLv3 or worse.

And on the flipside we basically get "source available" stuff like #SSPL which only serves as a means to commit #AssetDenial and monopolize commercial offerings...

@Em0nM4stodon not only must we resist but actively sabotage said attempts.

  • Add "#Wiper-PINs" to #Apps and Programs that'll open up a decoy profile and wipe the original data when typed in instead of the regular PIN.

Make it a mandatory feature and commit #AssetDenial against #Cyberfacists!

I'll have to see if I can make something work that'll actively mess with said attackers' attemots to visit/crawl a site...

@gimulnautti @khobochka The only thing that #RoyalitySchemes like that created are rich #CollectingAgencies that act as #ValueRemoving #Rentseekers (i.e. #GEMA only pas out 9,0909% of all the royalities collected and innan intransparent manner!) on every "Reproduction Device" (i.e. printers, burners, copiers, scanners) and "Blank (Recordable) Media" (i.e. USB drives, SD csrds, recordable BD-RWs) AND more criminalization.

Anything else is just not gonna work...

@BleepingComputer since most of those attacks aimed at #shitcoins it's easy to track those and commit #AssetDenial against them!

@randahl The fact that this is even possible is the problem.

  • But then again #Trump is - according to his own close associates - an #asset for #Putin and #Xi - as they gloat aboit using #Russia and #China for business deals and to commit #AssetDenial against the U.S. government and creditors!

One can really see this is an older video, as it misses not only #0BSD between #PublicDomain and #MIT but also #SSPL right of #AGPLv3 in a tab that's right of it called "#AssetDenial" or "#Monopolistic" or just "#AssholeLicensing" and a tab right of that for "#SourceAvailable" licensing, but I get ahead of myself...

@mattblaze Remember:

The only winning move is to commit "#AssetDenial" and commit to untappable communications with proper #E2EE via @torproject / #Tor.

  • @micahflee made #OnionShare which is basically the most idiot-proof way to communicate over Tor to this day!

@shoppingtonz @indigo I mean, #FakeFLOSS is a problem...

Kevin Karhan :verified:kkarhan@infosec.space

@marcan @fuchsiii Either way, like @landley I did the #copyleft experiment and those projects didn't see even remotely as much resonance or contribution as when I embraced #0BSD as a #PermissiveLicense (cuz #PublicDomain legally doesn't exist in #Germany: One cannot renounce #Authorship for legal reasons, otherwise #HateSpeech would be unprosecute-able, so only #Copyright lapses 70 years post-mortem of the Authors)...

TBH, the only way to preven #GAFAMs like Amazon from leeching #FLOSS is to either make #CCSS or offer the superior [#SaaS] solution by ticking boxes #aws can't ( i.e. due to #CloudAct, like #GDPR compliance) or inherently won't hecause it's antithetical to their business ( i.e. [airgapped] #SelfHosting & Support/Management Options for self-hosted systems)...

  • #healthcare-IT based startups in the #EU pay Companies like #Telekom to host their medical data because unlike #Amazon they can and will evidently enshure their U.S. division can't leak that data to U.S. govt. agencies and if one butters them with enough money, they'll likely sign the hardest NDAs one can throw at them...

@gentrifiedrose Ideally we'd have sich a tool that actively commits #AssetDenial to #Trackers like that, if not #BanTracking with 0 exceptions as a criminal felony!

@standingpad personally, I feel similar:

#GPLv3 is great when you want to commit #AssetDenial and enshure your project can't be "tivolized".

  • If you want to be real "anti-capitalist" go with #AGPLv3 so noone will use it in any commercial setting!

Tho I do think that #PermissiveLicensing like #0BSD works better long-term because #enforcement of the #GPL only backfires harder...

  • But don't take my word for it, when @landley has publicly admitted that this had harmed #BusyBox to the point of trashing the projects reputation.

I chose 0BSD for #OS1337 because I want to make a #GNU-free, minimalist #Linux.

  • OFC that only applies to the project and it's code: Linux is still #GPLv2-only and that's because GPLv3 is incompatible with how #licensing and #patents work and manufacturers of hardware can't bend reality to fit RMS's wishful thinking.

@DJDarren OFC - just like #iCloudLock has nothing to do with #theft of #Apple devices but solely with #AssetDenial against #Refurbishers...

@catsalad @zip @tixie depends...

I'd rather be able to commit #AssetDenial than someone being able to authenticate as myself against my consent!

@Elucidating well, #AGPLv3 and #GPLv3 demand things that are often not legally possible, like providing free and perpetual licenses to #patents and #tech adjacent to it.

That - among many other considerations, is why #Linux is #GPLv2only!

If you want to commit #AssetDenial, then #GPLv3 & #AGLv3 is for you but I've run that experiment too and it doesn't get any more contributions out of people than #0BSD.

Now you may think my shitty little projects like @OS1337 & #NUCbook don't count and that is valid, but @landley did maintain #BusyBox and he did the test as well and all the #litigation and #enforcement resulted in 0 lines of #code being contributed back to BusyBox...

And the folks behind #Samba now regret going GPLv3...

@xeraa @fuchsiii @puniko @linux_mclinuxface Case in point, #SSPL is an #AssholeLicense even more than #AGPLv3 because it's sole purpose is to commit #AssetDenial against #commercial users & #hosters.

It's worse than #GPLv3 because that one is lunacy in terms of #IP and espechally #Patents because it's solely ideologically motivated, but yeah...

IMHO everything under SSPL is #UnfreeSoftware in that it's #license terms are worse than a #SourceAvailable license as used by #Tarsnap because they are at least honest about the why...

I really hope not just #GAFAMs like #Amazon with #aws forked the pre-#Enshittification versions under #BSD and start publishing and maintaining these.

#Redis, like #Elastic and #MongoDB have chosen to kick everyone in the groin out of pettyness against commercial hosters, and I hope @Mastodon & @MastodonEngineering as well as @Gargron work hard to replace Redis with a real #FLOSS alternative like #RabbitMQ or even hetter, allow disabling a caching-DB in lieu of helping setup a #Ramdisk with a #PostgreSQL cache-DB on it.
