"Euphemisms in the assisted dying debate cloak it in language of compassion and discretion, but behind the veil there are some ugly truths. Some MPs debating the law are offended by terms such as suicide and killing, but if we hide from the reality of the words we use in the debate, we will also hide from the reality of the law."

Italy’s first assisted suicide exposes years of political inaction.

Tuscany carried out its first assisted suicide on Wednesday, a landmark moment in Italy, where the right to die has been technically legal since 2019 but never translated into national legislation.

It defies a national legal vacuum as Meloni’s government pushes a bill that sidesteps regulation of the right to die.

Over 1,000 doctors urge MPs to vote against #assisteddying bill

In Canada, it was illegal to proactively offer Assisted dying when terminal patients were the only ones eligible.

When it was expanded to include disabled people, they started allowing doctors to “offer it”. Encourage them to bring it up.

Do you think this should be permitted?

If you’re voting “Yes” and comfortable saying why you think they should proactively bring it up… please comment. I would appreciate knowing your reasonings (DMs open as well)

I still stand by my longstanding view that these sort of citizen's conventions are primarily a method of politicians ducking their duties but the success of this French one on Assisted Dying and our Irish one on abortion (even if the legislation was watered down from the convention) are rare examples of positive democracy in action.

France's National Assembly backs 'assisted dying' bill.

France's contentious right-to-die bill has been approved by the National Assembly in its first reading, putting it on a path that could see patients being granted the right to die with medical assistance.

Lawmakers voted in favor of the bill by a vote of 305 to 199, marking a key legislative step. The bill will now head to the Senate for further debate.

How 184 random citizens helped shape France’s debate on assisted dying.

French MPs will on Tuesday vote on two landmark bills on palliative care and assisted dying.

They're the result of months of debate shaped by a rare democratic experiment that brought together 184 randomly selected citizens to grapple with one of society’s most intimate and divisive questions: how should we die?

French MPs are due to vote on an assisted dying bill.

Key points were clarified during the bill's examination, as those who support a right to assisted dying sought to avoid giving opponents any ammunition.

The Assemblée Nationale's vote is scheduled for today.

The moment of death is nothing to fear. No different to loss of consciousness when going to sleep. What we fear, is prolonged untreated pain prior to death. Treat pain effectively and there is no need of an Assisted Dying Bill.

#Skwawkbox | Corporations and ‘care’ providers already looking to exploit ‘assisted dying’ bill for profit

"As Skwawkbox and others have warned, right-wing Labour MP Kim Leadbeater’s ‘assisted dying’ legislation – which is fully supported by the Starmer government – will see the killing of sick and disabled people, and even those with mental health issues or diabetes, carried out by corporations for profit."

Important warnings by the Royal College of Psychiatrists on the UK Assisted Dying Blll, currently in the formative stages in parliament.

If you are a UK citizen, write to your MP and make them aware of the issues.

Quotes:

UMMET NEEDS: "There should be a requirement for a holistic assessment of unmet need: Treatable needs such as intolerable pain, financial hardship and inadequate care or housing can make a person want to die. Yet the Bill makes no provision to assess unmet needs at any stage, nor consult others involved in the person’s care or life."

LACK OF QUALIFIED STAFF: "There are not enough consultant psychiatrists to do what the Bill asks: As things currently stand, mental health services simply do not have the resource required to meet a new range of demands."
