#PastelDrawing of a 35% #WaningCrescent #Moon that I actually did in June 2024 but totally forgot to share! #Stabilo #CarbOthello pastel pencils on black paper. This was a wedding gift showing the Moon on the couples' wedding day #AstronomySketching #SpaceArt #MoonArt

Absolutely amazing results from my #AstronomySketching #Workshop at the Women in STEM conference for teachers and technicians yesterday! We created pastel drawings of #M51 the #WhirlpoolGalaxy and they're all fantastic :-D

Pastel sketches of #LunarCrater #Clavius 6th Feb '25 at 16:58 & 19:44UT. The #EyesOfClavius looked stunning! Sketched from photos with white pastel on black paper. 2hrs 45min later the sunlight had begun to illuminate the crater floor #AstronomySketching #MoonSketching #MoonArt #SpaceArt

Memory from 2 years ago. I saw Steve Knight's gorgeous photo of the Sun rising over #LunarCrater #Gassendi and just had to create a #PastelDrawing of it. It's a simple drawing but it has so much impact #AstronomySketching #LunarSketching #MoonDrawing

Had a lovely day for my last set of #workshops of 2024. I taught 3 classes today in a local(ish) high school. All 3 did #AstronomySketching + 2 had short talks too. The pupils were impeccably behaved & they produced amazing results! Here are my sketches #SpaceArt #STEM #Outreach

Three pastel sketches of lunar crater Archimedes and a sketch of M51 the Whirlpool Galaxy, done on black paper by Mary McIntyre using black and white pastels

#PastelSketches of #ReinerGamma, one of several #LunarSwirls, magnetic anomalies that look like bright highland regions but they don't cast shadows. Left is under a lower Sun angle, right fully illuminated. Sketched from my own photos. The #LunarVertex mission will investigate them later this year #PastelDrawing #AstronomySketching #MoonSketch #LunarSketch #MoonDrawing

Craters in this section of the Moon are casting shadows and there is good terrain definition in the whole area, but Reiner Gamma is a lunar swirl that is in the centre, a long, wiggly line with an oval section in the centre that is bright white and yet does not cast any shadows like all the other brightly illuminated areas. For comparison the same region of the Moon was sketched again but under a full lighting angle so there is little definition and no shadows. The brightest albedo regions stand out, including Reiner Gamma at the centre

Tomorrow, Thur 11 Apr, 7:30pm UK time (UT+1), I'm doing an #AstronomySketching workshop for Southampton AS on Zoom, non-members welcome. We'll be creating 3 sketches with stuff you'll have at home. If you want to join in let me know and I'll get the details over to you.

My pastel sketch of #totality during yesterday's #TotalSolarEclipse. I wasn't there to see it in person this time, but I used the amazing photo shared by Tom Kerss (with permission) as a reference image. The #corona looked so different yesterday than it did when we saw the 2017 eclipse because we were in solar minimum then and near solar maximum now. There were several lovely #prominences visible too #AstronomySketching #SunSketch

pastel drawing of totality during the 2024 solar eclipse. The sun is completely covered by the Moon and the corona extends out in all directions with ribbons of grey sweeping outwards. There are several small red prominences along the limb

I've just put together the collages of all the #PastelSketches created during my two #AstronomySketching workshops at #Starfest 2024 last Thursday. Just like last year, some absolutely stunning work from people of all ages! I once again got a bit emotional seeing it all together like this. Thanks so much Steve Tonkin for inviting me to do the workshops again

Yesterday I had the most wonderful afternoon teaching two #LunarSKetching classes in a local primary school. Their final sketches were amazing! No photos for safeguarding reasons, but here's my sketch #Archimedes I created as we sketched along together #AstronomySketching #MoonSketch #LunarCrater #PastelArt #SpaceArt

Series of #PastelSketches I created showing the sunset over the #Ptolemaeus #CraterTrio. I used the NASA SVS lunar libration tool for the reference images. Sketched on black paper with #StabiloCarbOthello pastel pencils #AstronomySketching #LunarSketching #SpaceArt #AstronomyArt #MoonArt #PastelArt

Set of 4 pastel sketches showing the changing shadows around the Ptolemaeus crater trio as the Sun sets. Sketch one shows the trio fully illuminated, sketch two shows some shadows being cast by the crater walls and central peaks. Sketch three shows the trio mostly in shadow with just the edges and the top of one central peak catching the sunlight. Sketch four shows the are in full shadow apart from the left hand edges just catching sunlight

#PastelDrawing of a #FullMoon as it looked the day my bandmate Ricky was born. It was his birthday was last week so I created this for him. The creation timelapse with music we recorded in our 1st band together is here: youtu.be/MkQPARAgGiI?si=Wt90un #MoonArt #AstronomySketching

Black, white, blue and brown pastels were used on black paper to create this full moon art work. The white areas were brightly lit regions, with the colours and black used to shade the lunar maria regions and to represent the different basalt compositions within them.

2/2 2nd set of collages from my #AstronomySketching workshop at the #IoP #WorldSpaceWeek event on 7th Oct '23. I had well over 100 attendees, mostly children. Everyone created some stunning interpretations of the photos we worked from. The results are utterly amazing. I didn't get photos of everything because it was manic!

About 24 pastel sketches on black paper, mostly interpretations of the Moon but with a couple of nebula and galaxy sketchesAbout 20 pastel sketches on black paper, mostly of star clusters and nebulae, in a variety of colours
