The Atari 400 home computer... historically a giant brick of plastic and metal. Now available in ... checks notes... about the size of a postage stamp size.

All the Adventures nears the very end of playing all of 1982 games by returning to the prolific Peter Kirsch. He decided to experiment with graphics for the Atari, along with a unique control system where music substitutes in for reading.

As a teenager I drooled on these Atari ads... back in '79/'80 these puppies were way out of the budget, thirty years had to go by until I got me my own 400 and an 800 😎

Atari 400 (Mini) appreciation post.

I have owned this one for a while now but I haven't played very much yet. I just listened to the latest @stay_forever_podcast about the Atari 8bit computers and now I'm highly motivated to explore this system 😄

You know, when I was first learning computing, back in the 1978-1981 era, *everything* that I cared about was open source.

We just didn't call it that back in the heyday of 8-bit interpreted languages.

model in late 1979 had a poor keyboard to try and save money, and a standard for a third-party plug-in keyboard would have made a big difference.

Video game consoles would have likely had a keyboard port if one had been standardized between Atari / Commodore / Texas Instruments / Sinclair / Tandy.

Even things like programming a VCR in the late 1980's would have been easier if a standard keyboard interface had been created between competitors.

As a today no real need for a printer but back in the day, this Atari 820 provided logs, messages from users, and BBS status reports.. Oh and the occasional mid-night user logon wake up alarm…

...but what truly started things was my parents looking for "a real computer," which at the time translated into the #Atari800

I swear I can remember the smells of the computer showroom where they made the purchase. My brother (at the mighty age of 8) knew more about things and wanted more from them. My father would have wanted something capable and interesting, and my mother would only have used it for light word processing in those days. Of course with two young brats "play videogames" was probably of the highest concern, to keep us entertained and out of their hair.

I expect the cartrige-swapping and proximity to the 2600 favored this machine over the #Commodore64 at the time. I'm just glad we didn't get the #Atari400 and its membrane keyboard mess.

@brainwagon Ohhh, love the ! Learned BASIC on this when I was in school many years ago. We slipped out of school during breaks and went a few steps to a local radio/tv store where they had a few home computers like the TI99/4A, ATARI 400/800, ViC20 and C64.
