Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers of the genus Dacelo native to Australia and New Guinea, which grow to between 28-42 cm (11-17 in) in length.
The kookaburra's loud call sounds like echoing human laughter. They are found in habitats ranging from humid forest to arid savanna, as well as in suburban areas with tall trees or near running water. Even though they belong to the larger group known as "kingfishers", kookaburras are not closely associated with water. By Kaye Menner Photography.

Have you ever seen a mallee emu-wren (Stipiturus mallee)? This sweet little bird is a Triodia spinifex specialist, using the spiky, tussock-forming grass as shelter from predators and a safe site to nest and forage!

The mallee emu-wren was once found across mallee shrublands and heathlands, east and west of the SA–Victoria border, but land-clearing, bushfires and droughts have removed its habitat from much of its former range.

A white heron in the bush beside the lake. In the bottom right corner of the photo is a tiny bit of my bike's handlebars, proving that it was my on a ride taking the pic. 🤪

This magnificent creature is a black-necked stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) – the only stork species found in Australia!

If you get close enough, you will notice its neck is actually an iridescent purple-green, one of its most striking features, along with its powerful beak used to hunt snakes, frogs, turtles, eels and fish in wetland marshes.

How gorgeous is this Carnaby’s black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris)? 🖤💛

Recognisable for their white cheek patches and tail fathers, these black cockatoos can only be found in the south-west of Western Australia and are sometimes referred to as the ‘rain bird’ as they often migrate to higher rainfall areas after breeding in summer.
