๐ŸŒ Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo (Zanda funerea)

The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large, brownish-black bird with a short crest, distinctive yellow cheek patches, and a yellow tail band. It is distributed across southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, favouring eucalypt woodlands and forests. These cockatoos are diurnal, social, and often noisy, seen in pairs or flocks. Their flight is characterized by slow, deep wingbeats, and they primarily feed on seeds and wood-boring grubs. Two to three subspecies are recognised. Gemini 3 (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: Their most distinctive sound is a high-pitched, mournful, and drawn-out "kee-ow... kee-ow" call, which is often described as sounding like a rusty gate or a wailing cry. This call can carry over long distances.

Baby peregrine falcon Girri, at CSU in Orange, is getting big quickly now, and starting to get curious. She still sleeps a lot but she's standing and walking and flapping more when she is awake.

Not really a good picture, but I didn't feel like getting out of the car and closer to this #cassowary dad and his chicks. They also crossed the road quite quickly. #photography #wildlifephotography #australia #australianwildlife #australianbirds
Ooops - forgot alt text. So here it goes: photograph shows a cassowary and it's three chicks. The adult bird looks somewhat similar to an emu in shape and size. It has glossy black feathers that look a bit like fur. Its neck is featherless and blue, with a red wattle at the throat. The bird hat a helmet shaped bony casque on its head. The chicks are striped brown.

The Australian brushturkey is a wonderful feathery weirdo. And this one tried to steal my toast. We had long conversations about the errors of its ways.
Brushturkeys are one of the species of birds who incubate their eggs in huge mounds of plant material, that they then tend to keep the temperature in the mound perfect for the eggs. When you watch one constantly adding and taking away stuff, you wonder if it wouldn't be MUCH less stressful to just sit on the eggs.
The yellow sack at their necks also inflates when they get excited, like the dangly nose thing of American turkeys (forgot what it is called).

The bird is roughly the size and shape of a turkey, has black feathers and a bright red neck. Around the lower end of its neck is a bright yellow sack of skin. The bird looks absolutely fascinated by the food right in front of it.

I was in the back garden and heard a characteristic peep-peep. My friend the king parrot was back. I canโ€™t ignore that summons, went up to the deck to feed him. He was soon joined by his wife. #australianbirds #australia

I was standing in the vegetable garden wondering if the spinach was ready for picking when I glanced left - and saw these two tiny New Holland Honeyeaters babies looking at me.

Too new to the world to be frightened of me, they just sat there while i took this photo.

๐ŸŒ Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii)

The Forest Kingfisher, also known as Macleay's Kingfisher or the Blue Kingfisher, is a strikingly blue and white bird. It features a bright blue back, wings, and tail, contrasting with a white breast and a distinctive black eye-band through the eye. Males have a white nape, while females have a blue one. It is found in coastal regions of northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia, inhabiting open forests, woodlands, and mangroves. This kingfisher is usually solitary or in pairs. It hunts by sally-pouncing, watching from a high perch and then diving to the ground or water to seize invertebrates, small frogs, and lizards. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: These birds have a tough way of making a home! They reportedly fly with such force, striking an arboreal termite nest with their bill repeatedly to chip away material, that observers have occasionally found birds that have died from a broken neck during the process.

The first of Diamond & Gimbirโ€™s 3 peregrine falcon eggs hatched today at CSU in Orange, NSW. Diamond left briefly, and you can see it here sleeping while resting on the other two eggs. Gimbir's first time as a dad, so it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to the chicks when he sees themโ€”it took him a while to get the hang of incubating the eggs, but he's taken to it well now that he gets the idea.
