he image shows a group of people voting in a polling station. The individuals are dressed in swimwear, with some wearing colorful bathing suits and others in swimming trunks. They are standing in front of voting booths, holding ballots. The setting appears to be indoors, with framed pictures on the walls and a bulletin board in the background. The floor is wooden, and there are other people visible in the background, some of whom are also in swimwear. The text overlay at the bottom of the image reads, "Trump, cost of living the key issues as Australia votes," along with additional news headlines about a drone attack off Malta, Israel's strikes on Syrian cities, and a woman.

Good grief. I hope the LNP learn the correct lessons from this loss, accept the science of climate change and move towards the centre.

I hope this because Labor are hopeless milquetoasts who triangulate themselves 0.5% to the left of the LNP, so the only way they’ll do what is required is if the LNP move leftwards.

Looks like the Tories may not be the only party to lose their leader tonight.

the ABC election broadcast, with Albanese giving his victory speech. The chyron shows a narrow lead for Labor in Melbourne, a seat long held by the Greens’ Adam Bandt with a solid margin

And the Dickson pre-poll votes have come in and they lean Labor. Looks like the Potato has been Polievred.

And Antony Green has just called it for Labor, or more specifically ruled out the possibility of a conservative win

Watching the . Early figures so far, though the independents are making a promising showing.

an iPad on a coffee table, its screen showing the ABC election broadcast, with a graph showing a swing from the red party to the grey party. Various books are stacked nearby

Vote made, #DemocracySausage eaten. Alas, I discovered I was in a different electorate(*) than l thought, so my research about my candidates was partly wasted. Ah well.
(*) Changed electorate boundaries. They had the polling place set up for both. The nice AEC guy looked up my address and told me which one I was.

Hopes for the coming day’s :

- the Tories don’t get to form government
- the Greens hold onto their seats, and ideally pick up a few more
- the teals do similarly well
- Labor falls short of a majority, requiring them to negotiate with the Greens, ushering in a new era of progressive reforms
- the potato gets Polievred and loses his seat (stretch goal, for maximum lulz)

Fresh off the heels of the Canadian election, two more countries are heading to the polls this weekend. Our @NewsDesk shared a guide to the Australian election, while our @CultureDesk looked at how the Singaporean government is attempting to reach young voters. Both countries vote on May 3.

Night before the #AustralianElection2025 :
Looking up all the small, weird & often racist parties to figure out your preferential voting list.
Laugh-crying at how bad their websites, photos/bios & policies are.
Shuddering, knowing you'll have to decide a number to put in their box.
Voting is compulsory.
