Exciting update. After a few false starts, we definitely have legs now. Saw this zipping around. Looks like a . Also still have some who are not making the leap into froghood yet. They have really grown up.

Looking down at a pond, a brown froglet with four legs, tail, and frog-shaped body is under the water clearly visible to the left of the image. There is a large black tadpole to the right, underneath a thin green stick-like leaf, but it is very difficult to see.Looking down at a pond, a large black tadpole can be seen beneath the water, hovering over a white rock. It has not yet grown any visible limbs.

@troberts

Well, for the last two mornings since we put the clocks forward in Australia, the birds have been very quiet, depressed and generally out of sorts.

It’s all very well being enthusiastic about daylight saving, but you’ve gotta think of the wildlife too!

I also love this one for the Australian white ibis: “I feel like bin chicken tonight“

There are some fun taglines for the various birds in the list. I quite enjoyed this one for the Pied currawong: “Can't go wrong with a currawong”.

Voting is open for Guardian's Bird of the Year 2025: theguardian.com/environment/ng

I didn’t realise this is how it worked: you can vote again every day, with tallies resetting at midnight. The 5 least-popular birds get dropped at the end of each day. The last day is 14 Oct, when you vote one last time among the final 10 birds, and the winner is announced on 15 Oct.

I had to vote for the Wedge-tailed eagle as the only eagle on the list, but there are lots of good ones to choose from.

The hazards at Mungo National Park are not what you’d think.

Had some of our local King Parrots come to visit this afternoon. This one noticed I was whistling at it (to notify it of the seed I'd just put out).

The Australian pelican may feel like a seaside favourite, but its true homeland lies deep in the desert. When rare floods transform the outback into vast inland seas, tens of thousands of pelicans embark on epic journeys of thousands of kilometres to breed. How do they know when the waters will rise, and what calls them back to these hidden heartlands?

It was back in the same tree fork this afternoon, but now there was a better view of its tail, which has a white tip and isn't fluffy, so I'm going with Common Ringtail Possum for an ID on this one.

Found a snoozing possum in the fork of a melaleuca tree on the way to the carpark this afternoon at work.

Photos are naff due to the difficult position and position of the sun.

ETA: My apologies - I labelled this animal as a woylie. It's in fact a rufous bettong. The centre does have woylies as well. Thanks to @mads for spotting that!

Correction - this is a rufous bettong, not a woylie. A Rufous Bettong is "Largest of the potoroids. Fur is shaggy grey with a rufous tinge on top; the underparts are pale grey. The tail is grey, sometimes with a white tip. Muzzle is short, with fur between the nostrils. Bare pink skin surrounds the eyes, and the ears are relatively long."

A brush-tailed bettong, or woylie, looking off to the left of frame. A woylie is a small nocturnal, kangaroo-like marsupial with greyish-brown fur on the upperparts and flanks and pale grey fur on the underside. Their long, prehensile tail is darkly coloured with a distinctive black brush at the end and is often used to carry nesting material such as grass and bark. Adults can grow to 38 cm (head-body) and 1.6 kg, with females slightly smaller than males.

The one in the shot is about the size of a small cat. Woylies are critically endangered and only found in small populations in West Australia

Exciting news. Spring is here and my tadpoles have reappeared. They're so good at hiding and have gotten so big. There are at least three left, and after 11 months there are still no legs.

A large black tadpole leaning against a white pebble underwater and surrounded by leaves and plant roots. A large black tadpole with a big tail rests at the edge of a blue children's pool full of water. A tree branch is next to it, as well as a dead leaf, which is roughly the size of the tadpole's body.
