Sometime soon - I'd like to openly discuss where the #safety line is drawn for other students, staff & educational volunteers when kid on kid violence happens & one of the kids is #ASD #SpecialNeeds. I haven't been able to figure this out. How can we keep kids like this in schools because we need to find ways to do that. Kicking them out doesn't help society, in the long run.
I support trying our best to help misunderstood ASD kids & helping them get more supports at younger ages. Many don't get enough supports.
I have tolerated a lot of physical abuses (being spat on, punched, kicked, getting scratched & hair pulled, etc.) because many #descalation methods didn't work on the job. I worked in an elementary school in North Saanich as a specialized teacher's assistant & all the students I worked with were ASD on varying levels.
We had 2 quiet therapy rooms. Those were the only safe sanctuaries for the ASD kids who felt overloaded & needed to be away from everyone else. Often, we had multiple kids having meltdowns & there wasn't any other sanctuary spots for them within the small school. I felt so helpless during those days but pretended everything was A-OK. I took kids out to the yard & to the gardens to try & distract them. Sometimes that worked. Other times, I had to deal with multiple screaming kids, having mass meltdowns at the same time - when we were constantly understaffed. That was a very difficult job. I was severely underpaid for it.
ASD kids needed more support staff in schools & they still do. They all deserve that investment from our government. They are all worth the investment.

Have been in #Centreparcs #Longford #Ireland this week and I am so impressed with the #Accomodations they made for #AutisticKids.
Every request I made on site was met with respect and kindness. They made brilliant adaptations to activities so my daughter could enjoy them (and I mean enjoy..... not just cope and mask).
E.g. She beamed through meeting Santa because they let us in the back door 1st thing in the morning before music on (their own suggestion), away from crowds, no queues etc.

One of Zip’s friends is having a birthday party at a laser tag place and when we got the invitation the parent told me that she understood if zip wouldn’t be able to cope with the laser tag for sensory reasons but that the birthday kid would still really like to invite him. She’s going to send me a time breakdown for their planned activities so we can choose which part(s) of the party zip would enjoy coming to. #Autistic #AutisticKids
Final leg of three weeks of work travel this week. Heading to Tasmania for the first time, which I am quite looking forward to.
On the other hand I have been surprised at how much me being away has impacted the kids. In my mind it is always easy to downplay the role I have in the family routine.
So looking forward to exploring more and meeting some great colleagues in person, but also looking forward to settling back into our normal routine.
@Supposenot Hey, I'm Autistic and so are my husband and 3 kids and we’ve been where you are now.
I have heard this question before, from parents of #AutisticKids and I wish someone had said this to me when I was in your position, so…
If your #Autistic child has had a rough time at school, the last thing they need is to be put back into an educational environment.
If they struggled for a year, then they need a year off. If it was 2 years, then they need 2 years off. At least.

@Supposenot They need time to recover. No child can learn if their mental health is shattered.
The goal of finding the ‘right college’ or ‘program’ is a dead end, if the child doesn’t want to do it. No matter their ‘potential’.
The Autistic Community is littered with former ‘Gifted Children’ who burnt out. I think that #autisticburnout is a bigger risk right now, than finding the right college.
Hope it goes well xx

@mepurfield @actuallyautistic I am the Inclusion Rep (I invented this role) for my school's #ParentAssociation this year and introduced an inclusion hour to our christmas bazaar; opened an hour before main bazaar, was quiet, no queues, visual plan etc. Huge success. I really believe that #AutisticParents are the best people to tell non-autistic parents+teachers what #AutisticKids need.
