That's what I learned, too. It's usually 1 ratio with 1 clutch for Neutral, R/D being a motor polarity switch.

But losing the parking interlock does seem a shame to me as I always considered that to be a bonus feature of automatic transmission. Not only was there a parking brake, but as belt and braces the transmission was physically interlocked too when parked.

I've had handbrake cables stretch, brake shoe linkages break, and brake drums get worn. I own a pair of chocks. I was once given the advice to leave the car in gear when it is parked on some hills, even though the handbrake was on.

And I did once wake up to a vehicle that had rolled into the middle of the street.

Having a backup for the handbrake is pretty ingrained, even though by the end of the 20th century people were confidently claiming that handbrakes had got good, now. (-:
