Avocets again? Why not. I'm collecting ’em – I'll soon ’ave a set...

(Photographed yesterday at RSPB Middleton Lakes.)

Photo of two Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta). The Avocet is a wading bird with long legs, a long bill, and a slightly elongated neck. The bird’s plumage is mostly white, but the top part of the head, and the back of the neck, is black; there are also black markings around the borders of the wings and the tail. The beak too is black, and not only is it elongated, it turns upwards towards the end. The long legs, partly under water in this image, are a pale blue colour. Both birds are facing towards the left of the image so that we see their left sides, broken reflections of which can be seen in the blue water.

If anyone had told me, back when I started birding, that one day I’d be able to watch Avocets at a place just an hour’s drive from my home in West Northamptonshire, I’m not sure I’d have believed them. Today I took that one hour drive (to RSPB Middleton Lakes near Tamworth in Staffordshire).

Photo of an Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), a wading bird with long legs, a long bill, and a slightly elongated neck. The bird’s plumage is mostly white, but the top part of the head, and the back of the neck, is black; there are also black markings around the borders of the wings and the tail. The beak too is black, and not only is it elongated it turns upwards towards the end. The long legs, mostly under water in this image, are a pale blue colour. The bird is facing towards the left of the image so that we see his or her left side, and their beak is open.

"Everybody was kung fu fighting
Those Avocets were fast as lightning
In fact, it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing"

An American Avocet feeds in the Great Salt Lake early one April morning. This was such a beautiful and peaceful morning with the snow capped mountains in the background. I really need to get back there!

This is a tall vertical frame. An American Avocet is posed in the shallow water of the Great Salt Lake. The bird is in the lower right third of the frame facing left with its bill angled down into the water. The scene is very blue as this was taken early in the morning. There is a reflection in the calm lake water in the foreground and there are blue snow capped peaks in the background.

The visiting #Avocet finally woke and had a stretch.
Don’t get me wrong - it’s great to see one in #Belfast - but it does seem to spend a lot of time asleep đŸ˜đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

Shots are heavily cropped and processed.

On the last day of our workshop in Utah this past spring, the sunset was absolutely amazing and the sky was on fire. I love the flow of the composition and how the clouds frame the Avocet. April 2024.

An American avocet poses all alone in the lower right third of the frame. It is sunset and the sky is on fire with yellow, orange and pink tones. The avocet is a silhouette and is facing left and dipping in the water to feed. The horizon is in the lower third of the frame and there is a strong reflection. Orange clouds are crossing from the horizon on the far left to the sky on the right. With the reflection, the clouds form a large arrow pointing to the left, the same direction the bird faces.
