Today in Labor History September 6, 1869: The Avondale fire killed 110 miners, including several juveniles under the age of 10. It led to the first mine safety law in Pennsylvania. Avondale is near Plymouth, Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna River flows nearby. The mine had only one entrance, in violation of safety recommendations at the time. In the wake of the fire, thousands of miners joined the new Workingmen’s Benevolent Association, one of the nation’s first large industrial unions (and precursor to the United Mineworkers and the Knights of Labor). The union was ultimately destroyed through infiltration and sabotage by the Pinkertons. My book, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” opens with this fire. My main character, Mike Doyle, joins the bucket brigade trying to put out the flames shooting out of the mineshaft.

If you are curious about the project, the Doris Avenue rebuild (or extension) would provide a better way for #Avondale residents to exit the neighborhood

An indirect result and objective would make Doris the easier “car way” to go north south in that part of North York as to allow Yonge to have car lanes transformed to bike lanes and larger sidewalks.

Has anyone here used the Avondale Road barely-marked "bike lanes" from around the Power Line Trail up to NE 132nd? Because on Google Maps they lack things like "this is a bike lane" markers except at the very, very end. Right now I've marked them as dual sharerows because of how bad they look to me. But are they secretly okay in person?

Thirty years ago, my wife and I were rehabbing the barely liveable workers cottage style frame home that we ended up raising our children in. There was a crack dealer working out of an apartment a few addresses south of us, and plenty of gang activity in the area.

Now, thanks to thousands of young families, just like ours, Avondale is one of the "coolest" neighborhoods in the world..
